The police would have been arresting me and not him, he would have been either in the medical center , the graveyard or wondering where his hand that hit me went. It is a stupid law that says parents are not allowed to hit their children.

Apparently she hit him first. Violence begets violence all the time. This child is obviously walking around with a lot of anger. He is a threat to himself and the society as a whole. He needs serious counselling, not further anger or jail. Perhaps the folks at Ujima can help him.
We do have a lot of angry children in our midst. Seek help for them before it gets to this point.

When William Marlin pa**ed the compulsory education for all children, he stupidly allowed parents from other islands to bring their children to benefit from compulsorily education. Some came to SXM just a week before school was opened last year. Compulsory education should have been for the ones who were here already on the island. But as usual, the immigration department and the education department were not working together. I have been predicting this would happen. We have no idea what backgrounds these youth bring with them and what they were exposed to back in Jamaica, St.Domingo, Guyana, Haiti. We have no medical records from these children, psychological back grounds etc....the mothers were on SXM working already, and when compulsary education came, they all sent for their children, many of them teens to come and enter school (at tax payers benefit)

Compulsary education, yes WM taught he was getting more votes by doing this, but oh how wrong he was. Maybe he can go back to the cla**room now and teach those unruly foreign children. Maybe the depatment of education or a school foundation have somewhere space for you to earn an extra buck to carry on what you created. You know he (WM) is already past 61 years, but because of the shortage of teachers, maybe he can again apply for a job, eventhough he didn't teach for about 18 years but politricking. WM, do you need extra funds? Think about going back before the cla**room and do some serious earning and teaching now. You and your cronies seem to know what is best for the youth, the nation and most of all the people of Dutch SXM.

Lot's of mothers/parents know their children behavior,sending their children to school hungry,not asking where u got that phone and many other things.Mothers having their different men or women sex mate come to their home,talk all manner of things and in any ways to their children.Leaving their children home hungry and go partying,casino long hours.We all have to hear this disturb child story before condemning him.
Lot's of us do not want to face they truth,be told the truth but quickly use punishment as a tool.

Go to our schools and ask how many children is hungry,how many children theirs parents check their home work books.How many of these children have been abuse,how many of these children watch their parents change men/women like there cloths, Some parents also doing two Jobs and believe their children should understand that all this is being done to make them happy and comfortable . Ask who r these children role model.The songs they listen.
Now when our children start reacting we call the police,let's us all show respect to gain respect.Let's help our children than punishing them for our short falls.Thank God for the Adventist Church that feed some of our children but to those who that do not have to eat and have to stay in school,it SAD.

Indeed a very sad situation. As a supporter of a rehab center in sxm I witness yesterday a similar incident. There was no physical action but the verbal abuse by such a youngster was unbelievable. The rage that was display was unbelievable. What do you do, who do you call and what is the solution to this problem that is causing a serious problem within our society.
The only solution is the establishment of a boot-camp and that Parliament approve laws that make the transfer much more easier and not so complicated. I am willing to be part of any structure that is interested in the development of such a camp. I believe once such a camp has been established we will see a drastic change in the attitude of the school population. Obviously the intention is not to take over the roll of the parents as the parents are responsible for their children. Any such a program required strict participations of both parents. Churches, schools, sports instituitions and clubs need to re-evaluate their programs and addressed the issue of youth violence in all of their programs. We need to begin to established stricter dress codes in all the institutions related to the education of youth.
The bottom line is they are our children and inspite of their short comings we need to love them and need to help them to overcome their shortcoming. The reason why they are like that is because we the parents have failed to be good parents. The bible tell us to teach them so tomorrow they can walk on their own. Let us acknowledge that we have fail and let us, Parents come together and make a difference for your child. The result is he either ends up 6 feet deep under the ground or locked up in jail for a long time. The choice is yours. Have a blessed day

Send him back to the Jamaica and let the country government deal with his out of control behavior. This is clearly not St Maarten problem.

Government have to call or arrange a meeting with the juvenile department in Jamaica, and let them know that St Maarten do not have a juvenile institution for children with behavioral problems. This will be one less space in the box at Cayhill.

The street leading from Super Plaza to SZV is a breeding ground for drug dealers. They go there to sell drugs to the school children (to school girls also) as if they are selling candy.....What happen to the police bike patrol?.......And the principle, he/she should be at the gate when the youths are coming to school and leaving the school to go home.

Do this country (St Maarten) a favor and send him to Jamaica, when he pa** the test at the juvenile institution for his behavior St maarten government should consider letting him back in the country. By that time he will be a man, paying his own bills and not depending on his mother.

Woo. I am a mother, I do 2 jobs, My ex- husband always there for the kids, keeping them in line, I will always thank him for being there. My kids, don't make joke with me. A Father who loves his child chastises him. Correction/ discipline in a child's life, from the very beginning of his life, is essential.

However, some parent(s) know not how to discipline a child. In their anger (when their patience runs out) they would beat the child....often not caring where the belt/wire/tree bush/hand/ lands on the child body.

Some parents would go so far as to use their fist on a child.

If this Sint Maarten does not educate (young and old) the parents on how to be a parent, there will be problems. We are dealing with people (Jamaican, Dominican, Hatian, etc.) that have a different cultural background than we do. If we do not pa** on our own fundamental values then what do you expect.......these people will hold on to what they know.

There are many young angry Jamaicans out there......that is no suprise. Have you ever hear a Jamaican mother speak and beat her child?? I have. The manner in which they speak to their child is very different.....they speak to them as if they are an adult...not a child.

The young spanish kids you see.....be not fool by the age. Often they have raised to be little "Marias".

No secret but it is not something we openly discuss. Just like we do not discuss they amount of your kids being rape by family member(s), parent(s), school peers, or strangers.

If these are the Sint Maarten future then the future looks very bleak indeed.

the epedemic that we are face with has nothing to do with nationality. it is happening right here with our own, but because of shame we try to cover thigs up. untill we bring back god in our daily lives worse than this is going to take place. We do not know the root of his problem, there might be many factors. Dispite what ever the circumstances, putting him in prison with no professional counceling will only result in him going back to prison a second time for something worse like murder. We already have the problems lets find a solution. We need boot camps like was suggested in previous blogs. The children needs to understand that in order to progress in a positive way they need to have ultimate respect for oneself and others as well. He should not be let back in any school period untill he gets professional counseling. As a suggestion, once a chid reaches a certain age and migrates to the island they need to have a police record to be able to enter our secondary schools period depending on the age it should be applied for elementary schools as well. What is sad, many of these social issues are not being address by our governing representives

It all begins at home, some women are lucky and some ain't, to have the father of there kids help them rear them in the proper way, when a child is partly grown up with both parents present it is hard for children to see there parents split, they carry things around!! For example, I have a friend of mine that is divorced with 3 kids for her x, does he support the kids? No, does it spend time with them? No, men tend to look at women as if they are not human beings, they don't get tired and we all know when we are tired we are frustrated! I have seen my friend struggle until she was going out of her mind, 2 jobs, 3 kids, bills and no break to catch herself, well her oldest son saw his father with his new girl friend and her kids, why is it that a man can support another man kids but not his own?? well my friend son when he got home he cursed and rant about the treatment from his dad!! his mother hugged him and he actually pushed his mother to the floor.... Some men have no idea what they do to there kids, this mother never reported her son because she is busy showing him the difference between the father and her self!! there is no type of protection on this island for women in this situation! mother work harder, longer hours for there kids while the men run to make beds in other homes!!

I does really try to understand how some of u grown folks does think . And SXM offers parenting cla**es so I think alot of u needs to look into to these cla**es and learn the new techinques that are being brought foward on how to deal with your children. CLEARLY WE SEE THAT HITTING THEM ISNT DOING NTN BUT MAKING THEM INTO THE CHILDREN WE PRAY FOR THEM NOT TO TURN INTO.

All of those people commenting that a child need a father figure to survive my question is this, when a woman willfully gets pregnant for another woman's husband that already have a family how can that father figure be in two houses at the same time! U make your bed hard so now U have to lay on it, and many of U who is commenting right now are in relationships with people who are committed to someone else and Ya'll want to give advise, woooooo. The kids react to what the see their both parents doing, so women stop blaming the men for not being there and for once do research on the men first before U lay with them and produce children, because this is the price to pay and the kids are the only ones to suffer!
