Philipsburg:--- Minister of Finance Hon. Hiro Shigemoto, in reaction to an article that appeared in one of the daily papers last week Friday, says the allegations reportedly made by former Commissioner of Finance X. Blackman are groundless.

"I have a clean record as a civil servant. I have an impeccable career working as a public servant for 14 years in the service of the people and counting," Minister of Finance Hon. Hiro Shigemoto proudly said on Sunday.

Shigemoto was addressing allegations attributed to Blackman who served as Commissioner of Finance for a period of approximately 15-months.

"I took the responsibility to act when situations arise and occurred that demanded my action as a public servant of the people. Bringing things forward 11-months after the fact, cannot be part of what we are trying to build here. Political maturity needs to move forward and politicians need to set the example for others to follow.

"With our new constitutional status as country, the people of this great island are demanding better and to do this each Minister has their responsibilities and need to take action. This sometimes can lead to difficult decisions being taken, but nonetheless, decisions that are necessary to better the organization that provides service to the community.

The allegation of making payments without the Commissioner of Finance knowledge or the knowledge of the Executive Council, Minister of Finance Shigemoto says that is also baseless.

"The allegations described in the story in the daily newspaper attributed to the former Commissioner of Finance are without value. The Commissioner had 15-months to bring forth sanctions or disciplinary action for the alleged behaviour and actions.

"I understand that in the function of Director of Resources one has to take unpopular decisions in the best interest of the island, and in doing so one doesn't make many friends, however, that is the nature of the job and if the former Commissioner during his tenure felt that I acted as he described then he should have acted at that time and present his case to the Executive Council and have me reprimanded," Minister of Finance Hon. Hiro Shigemoto pointed out.

Former Commissioner of Finance X. Blackman received three motions of no confidence within 15-months in public office. The motions according to media reports at the time were presented because the opposition party in government at the time believed the Commissioner of Finance had not handled the preparation of the 2010 budget properly, which had resulted in negative advices from the Committee of Financial Supervision CFT.

The third vote of no confidence was unanimously carried by the then Island Council which also included the National Alliance, the party that brought him in as a 'professional' Commissioner.

I would advise the minister not to go "tit for tat" again with the former commissioner.

Let's focus on restructuring our tax system, increasing compliance and presenting smoothly approved budgets in the future.

The minister had a rough start, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, the next 3 to 6 months are also crucial for him.

Nicely put Shooz. I second that motion ;-)

Blackman is eating sour grapes. Let him spew hot air. He has to vent his frustrations somewhere. He is a "has been" in every aspect of his life.

Let Blackman go back where he came from and was born. You see who he is an advisor now for.?? Opportunist, that's all he is. Was not even written in on SXM in the census office when he was about to be sworn in. Governor did a quick fix to swear him in a few days later.
You were born right here on SXM from a then St.Maarten born mother and a Japanese father. Your roots go back here for more than 300 years. You were not imported like so many. Who is who? Ask our L.James who was not born here either. Typical NA tatics. Sour people even more than grapes. ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

  • as usual...

As usual, we are quick to be influenced, hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray. We fall for the smokescreens daily. And that is because even when we claim we can read, we fail to comprehend what we read. Now for the crux of the matter. The former commissioner of Finance has disclosed several questionable shortcomings in the performance of the now minister of finance -- when the latter was in the civil service. Granted, the former commissioner should have taken immediate actions at that time against the then civil servant. Why he did not, remains a mystery to me. Fast forward to country St. Maarten when that civil servant is a government minister. Mind you, the minister was not a candidate for public office in last held elections. But the reason he was nominated by Theo is because he can be (and is) used by Theo. Hiro has no back-bone and never has. Hiro's present position came about as a result of his 'lobbying' and pa**ing information to Theo, when he and former commissioners could not see eye to eye. To make a long story short, Hiro -- contrary to what he claims -- did make payments when no approval had been given by the then Executive Council.

Are you saying that the James who are from both the Dutch and French side of the Island going back 100's of years could not have a child off SXM... L. James and his family are Sint Maarten/Saint Martiners....Get your facts straight.

The Democrats seem to be basically nicer people, but they have demonstrated time and again that they have the management skills of celery. They're the kind of people who'd stop to help you change a flat, but would somehow manage to set your car on fire. I would be reluctant to entrust them with a Cuisinart, let alone the economy. The UP, on the other hand, would know how to fix your tire, but they wouldn't bother to stop because they'd want to be on time for Ugly Pants Night at the country club.

Hiro, you know full well that what was written is the gospel truth. Besides, the former commissioner did not even mention ALL the things you did to f%^ up the last government, just because you wanted a much higher salary than government policy allowed for. Furthermore, you know you were protected by someone who will remain nameless at this point in time, but you played the political game, informing all concerned, especially the DP, the same DP who did not give you the increase in salary that you wanted. But, your day will come, brother man.
You have burned all other bridges and Theo does not trust you one bit. If you could be untrustworthy to people who put you there, imagine what you won't do to Theo if and when you get a chance. Do you think he doesn't know that? You are a means to an end, and your end WILL come, because you don't go playing dangerous games like spin the web, with politicians.
You dare say you have an impeccable career? All the civil servants who worked with you know what kind of spiteful, undermining, lying, lazy, untrustworthy and devious person you are.
Motion of no confidence you say? Hardly any of your co workers would give you a vote of confidence, truth be told. You should be thankful there is this thing called 'keep your mouth shut' as a civil servant because others will have a whole lot to say. That was the first oath that you broke, publicly, you criticised your employer harshly and wrongfully and yet you got away with that one too. If that was done by another person of your staff, you would have made sure that person was fired.
You didn't even have the qualifications to head the finance department, moreover to be director of resources or even minister of finance. You studied Sociology. You feel great now because you think you are on top of the world. Remember, the same persons you spit on on your way up the ladder, will be the same persons you have to look in the face on your way back down. We are patiently waiting for that day. Sayanara!

No such thing as a Clean record.

Hiro is an dumb a**, was in school and still is. Theo's pet toy for money laundering.

If Mr. Blackman who is also a looser has anything proof wise he should present it instead of flapping his jaw in the media.

Someone once said "the world is my stage and I have a role to play". In the political arena there is no playing field and we need to start realising this. Stay focus on your task.

Do not let others draw you out in an area, where you might get burn. any fool can start an argument but a wise man knows when to hold his tongue. Keeping queit is often seen by many as a sign of defeat but, little do many know, it is the greatest power ever.

Do not cry over spill milk......we all have made mistakes and will continue to make mistakes. But as the bible says [paraphrasing]: a just man may fall seven time but he will rise again.
