I commend the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA) for taking the initiative to establish an Environmental Defence Fund. I also take this opportunity as a promoter for the environment to commend all other environmental organizations and groups for their good efforts towards our community.

The SHTA intends to use to use the funds that they receive from our community to generate funds for legal action against the degradation of the natural, cultural and social environment on Sint Maarten.

I am calling on the people of this great country as well as the business community to contribute on a monthly basis to this fund so that the SHTA can use these funds in a wise manner for various environmental projects. I will be making a personal contribution to the fund and I call on all my colleague parliamentarians to do the same.

The bank account at the Scotiabank is as follows: SHTA 1015922.

Every Sint Maartener has a stake in our environment and the preservation of such. Every little measure taken to treat our environment better will lead to a better society.

Sustainable development is necessary at this point in time and everybody has a role to play.

I have made considerable progress with drafting a law to ban disposable plastic bags. They are a severe threat to our community especially our marine environment. I will be presenting this piece of legislation within short.

Johan "Janchi" Leonard
Member of Parliament, United People's (UP) Party

Janchie: are you for real? While you could be applauded for working on draft legislation for the banning of plastic bags, you, sir, form part of the same despicable club of clueless politicians without a true vision for St. Maarten. You merely utter a few words, at any given time -- hoping to obtain some political mileage. But you have no master plan with the dots on the i's. The public is not that naive anymore, I believe. What the public wants is transparency, leaders with courage that would work for the poor and disenfranchised and protect the interests of St. Maarten. I, for one, have seen very little of that since 10.10.10

I hope he takes into account that there are biodegradable bags and that they come in various grades.
I believe that government should come up with a standard that is fair and acceptable to most.

business that wants me to walk with a shopping bag wherever go, doesn't want my business.

    Blessings!!

Really Janchi? the SHTA must be sooo happy that they have your approval! Just imagine that you would disagree, they would have been horrified! You don't get it do you! The SHTA was forced to start a environmental defense fund, because parliament REFUSES TO or is INCAPABLE OF doing their job. WE the people WANT our environment protected, mostly from looney politicians that feel they can do whatever they want. Maybe next time around we can give the SHTA some seats in parliament.
