gsprott02012012Philipsburg:--- Police arrested five Anguillians who robbed a set of tourists on the Boardwalk early New Year's morning. One of the main culprits identified as only as T.M. 22 years of age was shot in his leg by police when he drew an illegal firearm at them. Acting Police Spokesman Giovanni Sprott identified the Anguillian robbers as A.C., N.B., K.L., R.P.C., and T.M. who are between the ages of 18 to 24 years of age.
Sprott said around 5am on January 1st, 2012 some tourists reported to police that while they were in the Philipsburg area they were robbed by two unknown men on the Boardwalk and one of the robbers was brandishing a firearm. The Acting Police Spokesman said the bandits robbed the island's visitors of several personal items such as cellular phones, money, jewelry, cameras, and other items. Sprott said when the culprits finished robbing the tourists they fled the scene on foot and as soon as police learned of the incident they conducted an intense search of the Philipsburg area.
Sprott said with the help and information provided by members of the community, police managed to locate the main suspect who was hiding on the premises of Oranje School on Front Street.
The Acting Police Spokesman said police ordered the suspect to come out from his hiding place and surrender to police but instead the suspect T.M. chose to draw his firearm on the officers and the police officers were obligated to open fire on the suspect, shooting him in his left leg.
The suspect T.M. a native of Anguilla was still in the possession of the stolen items belonging to the tourists at the time of his arrest. Sprott said police has since confiscated the stolen items and the illegal firearm as the detectives continue their investigation.
As for T.M., the injured gunman was transported to the St. Maarten Medical Centre for treatment, he was later released and remains in police custody.
Sprott said further investigation led police to the other four suspects: A.C., N.B., K.L., and R.P.C. were later apprehended in their hotel rooms. Police also found several other stolen items on the suspects.
Currently, the Prosecutor's Office is busy investigating the shooting and robbery as they piece together the case.
SMN News learnt that detectives from Anguilla were on the island on Monday meeting with the detectives that are busy investigating the robbery and shooting involving the Anguillians.

Again, congratulations to the men in blue for showing how civil and professional they can be. In another country that idiot would be leaving the scene in a body bag.

Men have gotten shot to death in the U.S. for kind of stuff, in one case for going for his wallet. Make no mistake about the courage and restrain it takes to do that, even tough most of us would have wished one less parasite on our community would have been exterminated.

Congrats to our police for their quick action. Great job officers.

It is time that YOU politicians take a HARD AND SERIOUS look at our shoddy immigration laws and do something to rectify this ASAP!
IMMIGRATION / BORDER PROTECTION HAS HEIGHTENED WORLDWIDE EXCEPT SXM.

Yes, we have to fill out immigration forms and answer a whole heap of questions when entering Anguilla and everywhere else...Even Haiti (before and more so now after the earthquake).

Remember the 2 Dominican monsters that was recently sentenced to life? Well, if our immigration laws would allow due diligence, they would have spotted a violent criminal at the immigration check point.
Yes, one of those monsters committed grievous bodily harm to a tourists on board a boat in Dominica and migrated to St. Maarten immediately after being released from jail, only to continue his chain of crime, but on a bigger scale because they knew that their identity will be protected and they also DID NOT FEAR THE WEAK JUSTICE SYSTEM ON ST. MAARTEN.

It is a known fact that when a foreigner committed a crime in their country, they seek refuse in asylum land, aka St. Maarten.

2012: IT IS TIME TO PROTECT OUR BORDERS. (If SXM folds due to USA boycotting SXM, Holland cannot save us or our jobs. We all depend on tourism in one way or another...BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

2012: IT IS TIME TO STOP HIDING THE IDENTITY OF CRIMINALS. WE WANT TO SEE THEIR FACES AND WE WANT NAMES NOT INITIALS!
WE WANT TO SEE THEM BEING ARRESTED AND EXPOSED WHEN WE WATCH AVS EVENING NEWS!

2012: MINISTER DUNCAN, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE STOP REPEATING OVER AND OVER IN EVERY PRESS BRIEFING THAT THERE IS NO MORE SPACE AT POINT BLANCHE. You are only encouraging an increase in criminal activities when you publicly states this sad fact. INSTEAD, PLEASE FIND OTHER ALTERNATIVES DAMMIT!

LET US SHOW THOSE FOREIGNERS THAT ARE CALLING SXM A MICKEY MOUSE ISLAND THAT WE MEAN BUSINESS IN 2012. THEY WILL SOON BE CALLING US "LAND OF FIERCE WARRIORS". We will someday stand strong and protect every square inch of these shores like fierce warriors and a force to be reckoned with...JUST LIKE HOW THE USA PROTECTS ITS COUNTRY AFTER 911.

If the above is not taken seriously, then may God be with us all if the fate that once befell St. Croix befalls St. Maarten.

Great job by the police...and some very valid points by posted.

True for too St. Maarten has been known as the island with the most lenient justice system. Which encourages foreign and local criminals to continue to commit crimes here as all they will receive is a slap on the wrist.

Even growing up as a kid you knew that if you were going to commit a crime you'd do it on the Dutch side as life in Point Blanche's Sea Breeze Hotel isn't too tough. While if you committed a crime on the French Side, you get sent to Ba**e Terre where by the fact of being non-Guadeloupian you get treated more hostile.

So it is time that the laws get reviewed and the punishment increased. In times when society is going downhill (clearly the case in Sxm) the government needs to make adjustments to stem the problem. Increasing the penalties for crime would not deter the hardcore criminals, but would definitely curb those coward, opportunistic criminals.

Also, prison time is supposed to be punitive.Criminals have shown disregard for society and the rules under which social systems operate, thereby giving up their civil rights. So take away the luxuries and amenities in prison and why not institute menial on the chain gang labour? I'm sure that the government has ditches which need digging, ravines clearing etc. You have free labour. Put these people to work. Make the prison experience one they do not want to repeat. We have tried the soft reform and it did not work...time to change strategy!!

ohh yeah.. very valid point about immigration. This is the only country where any and everyone can enter without any scrutiny or serious questioning... The immigration here is to lapse and adds to the problem by allowing criminals to enter the country too easily.

We can say whatever. I am an Angullian too, but next time Police officer shoot to kill. What they think? Immigration cannot play a controle role in this issue aS these persons enter freely in Marigot to go over to the dutch side to commit their crimes. Shame on you fellow Anguillians. Be just visitors and do not come here to SXM with the wrong intentions. Do all your criminal acts back home not here as you do not belong here. Your fore parents that died here are surely turning over in their grave and even feel shame because of it. Whoever it might be, may very well be my family too, but this has no kind of excuse or pardon to say to the friendly people of SXM. Punish them good, let them be a very good example to other fellow men with such intentions. My part, family or not throw away the key on them and forget they are here on SXM. Punish them good, no softness in this act of criminality. Min. of Justice apply harsher sentences to so called vistors who are spoiling SXM name by committing crimes to locals and visitors.

Why not follow your own reasoning? Crimes committed BY "tourists" should be penalized 25% heavier than crimes committed by locals This to protect our local community just like how you want to protect our tourists.

RIGHTFULLY SO, THEY ARE PROTECTING THEMSELVES.

BUT HAVE YOU SEEN THE SPEED BOATS THAT OPERATE

When traveling to Anguila from St. Maarten, even if you are a born St. Maartener with a Ducth Pa**port, you must fill out a custom card now. Coming from Anguila, you just walk straight through, no problems. Well, this is what you get. We must do the same to protect our citizens and tourists, from bandits like those.

Its so sad to hear what happen because we anguillans love to come sxm to shop eat and spend our monies but those people only reside in Anguilla, there's only one Anguillan among them and god forbid he should have been shot to death because he broke out of prison in axa and his friends in sxm help hide him from authories

  • ANGUILLIAN
    avatar

I am Anguillian, born, raised and living on Anguilla. I am very embarra**ed and ashamed of what has happened but I must say this in now way should label all Anguillians. I must agree though that there is no harm in encouraging your Immigration to beef up security at their ports, us who are law abiding and come over for a get away, to shop or just lime I am sure would have no problem in adhering to the new immigration security laws. However, I must go on to say that many Anguillians are also ashamed and regretfully so of this incident. The youth (not only in Anguilla but many other island including St. Maarten) has gone astray and has no regard for anything. Let us all pray not only for Anguilla because of this incident but our Caribbean Island and the world at large.

Regarding the robbers coming from Anguilla, I would like to advise the many persons rushing to blame an entire island for the acts of a few, that Anguilla in the past has partially fed SXM for many years. The islands of St. Kitts - Nevis, Anguilla and St. Maarten was considered one family, until when the Europeans got wind of us. They and the many foreigners came and decided who should visit the other. Who needed a Visa verses who did not. And what, the Europeans needed none. People of SXM believe that grinning from ear to ear will keep them safe for ever. It is time to enforce the laws that are in place to combat the illegal activities. The police need to be given extra protection by the legal system in order to function as a proper police force. In other words the outdated laws dating well back to the 18 century need to be remove, or revisited. If we are a country, why haven't those laws been repealed? Let us not punish the entire people of Anguilla for the acts of a few, We should have relieved society of those elements on the night of New Years morning. I believe that Anguilla would have appreciated the fact, for as it now stands Anguilla is being plagued with the same form of crime. The majority of the boats coming from AXA, comes to the Frenchside. Who controls, the Europeans. They very well know that about 98% are coming to the Dutchside. Blaming Duncan is pure bull. Our Judiciary likewise is controlled by Europeans. What do you expect? Let us stop talking and more ACTION. Think rationally, stop the divide. We are in the end all black people, though suffering from the Willie Lynch Syndrome.

Many of you would be wondering what is meant by AXA feeding SXM. The goats, chickens, the pigs, the cows, the sheep, corn, peas, beans, potatoes. the house labor, the field labor, the nanny amongst the many. It all, at one time came from AXA.

Willy Lynch was a white slave master and plantation owner in the 1700s. His contribution to the world is his fool proof method of producing a perpetual slave out of the African negro. The indoctrination contained in the infamous Willy Lynch letter, is so complete that the black people in Africa, America, England and all over the diaspora are still suffering the damaging effects.

Any intelligent person can clearly see that Sutton misspelt the word shoot by erroneously hitting the letter to the right of T, thereby forming the word shooy. This is called a typo.

@ wait a minute, I agree with the Medieval Laws. Thieves were killed. Hurting them is creating a burden on society, and the social system. Food, medication, housing, transportation, etc. You see it would be easier to lift them. Society would see the deterrent and would learn from it. What is needed on SXM, is a force within the force as is the case in many countries. The Rule of Law, is a word most often used to mitigate between the hole and the a**.

@ Anguillan, Worth said. But I have one problem with the words , LET US ALL PRAY. My good friend, we are in the last 400 hundred years, and prayers won't fix it all. Stringent methods are needed to solve most of what we are faced with. Crime will not be deterred by simplicity. Crime today has evolved into a Mega Trillion dollar business for some, which are a few. ( The Elite ) Give some attention to the documentary entitled, Glen Greenwald Trust that you will appreciate the footage. Respect.
