Philipsburg:--- The Ministry of Finance has hired Ravi Daryanani to take up the position as the Head of Finance Department. Daryanani met with the staff of the Finance Department on Monday and Tuesday where he introduced himself as the new head of the department.
Daryanani is expected to take up his post as of November 1 2011 as the Head of Finance. Sources say Daryanani is a Dutch national who was born on St. Maarten to Indian parents. He studied on the island of Curacao where he also worked for the government of Curacao as the head of finance. Currently, Daryanani is working as the Director of Universal Time Curacao BV.
The new head of finance was also a financial controller for SAE at (Stichting Overheids Accountants Buro) SOAB as well as the financial controller at Visser Holding and DIGICEL Aruba. He has broad experience in all aspects of accounting, auditing and financial management.
Ravi Daryanani is the son of a well known Indian businessman who used to operate a store on St. Maarten.

Theo is now stepping up his game. Appointments such these can only help election campaign funding from certain ethnic groups. Can you blame the man?

People, cease and desist this foolishness in verbally attacking people getting appointments they rightfully deserve.

People, start getting accustomed to seeing second and third generation immigrants taking up career positions in our society.

They were born here. They grew up here. They were educated here. They travelled, studied and worked abroad and they are returning to their birthplace to make a positive contribution to their country.

Start learning to live with that fact of life and get a life yourself.
Please.

avatar

Things that makes you go ..... hhhhhmmmm.

However, I fully agree with "."

Quite a while ago I spoke of this very type of situation that was to come and here it is.

While our "Native, Indigenous" born here SXM (mainly black) youth" continue to drop out of school, hang out on the block, get pregnant by 15/16 or kill each other and have no proper education, children of immigrants are making use of the opportunities granted them by our Government.

Now the results are coming in.

People can jump high or low, this gentleman is a "born here" Dutch national SXM'er and deserve the rights to fill any position that he qualifies for.

Instead of bashing him, Joan or Theo, people should learn to get serious with their children (especially of the black race) and instill in them the importance of educating themselves instead of running around out there wanting to be "cool" or rather "fly".

His parents worked damn hard and long hours also but yet he was responsible enough to put his education first and not complain or roam the streets because his parents "did not spend enough time with him" and today he is reaping the benefits of sacrificing being "cool" or "fly" back then.
Every child on this Island have the same opportunity for a good education, be it furthering their studies abroad or right here at USM.

It is time for people to stop hating and get strict with their children when they are young. It is time for children to stop all the "bullcrap" of their parents not spending time with them because they have to work sometimes 2 jobs (for them the children). It is time for the Native, Indigenious (black) people of this Country to stop all the hating and get real about the upbringing of their children.

This is just the beginning. There are many "born here, Dutch national children of immigrants of Indian, Chinese, Hatian, Domincano, Jamaican, etc. etc decend who ARE taking their education serious and are now coming "back home" to reap the rewards of their hard work. It is their rights, wether you like it or not.

So please stop the hating and blame yourselves that you or one of your children did not get that position.

Again I say, ..... We need a serious mentality change in this Country ...... WAKE UP or face the consequences.

• I tell ya....
avatar

I don't have anything against the gentleman getting the job because if he deserves it, he deserves it and he came back to his island of birth. However, since October 2010, the government wilfully has John A. Richardson and others, all civil servants with many years of experience, sitting at home and refused to give them an a**ignment to work. They are all generations deep born St. Maarteners who were also educated.
With John's vast experience in that field, he could have easily been placed to work as head of the Finance Department. His educated and very bright daughter returned home as well since last year and government refused to give her a job, too, even though there are vacancies in her field of study. What message is that sending to other students who want to come home after their studies?
Like '456' stated, nepotism has to stop, and I will add, victimization of St. Maarten people must stop as well.

• change agent.
avatar

I support this type of change. If we locals keep depending on the born here crap we keep feeding each other, then we just get wet. We want to complain and then when others work hard and earn their stripes, we still want to complain some more. This is a born here from indian parents who worked to achieve his degree and is now back to serve his country. Poor fellow does not know what he got himself in yet.....wait and you will see. I wish him good luck with these bunch of losers who don;t know the benefit of hard work. The indian children aint clubbing every night, while we clubbing like there is no tomorrow. Wasting precious time in holland where our students are taking on average 9 years to complete a 4 year course. Outrageous bunch of knuckleheads. Guess they all are suffering from bornhere syndrome. Pity the fools. I am proud of Joan Duvale, Hiro Shigemoto and the likes who understand the system and do what needs to be done. Congrats to the new head of finance and good luck. you are a bornhere who is contributing to your island. Bravo.

• Hold up one minute!!!!!
avatar

@ I tell ya....

While I understand what you are saying, and with all due respect to Mr. Richardson, I would not be in favor of him filling that position at this time. He has had his time. A lot has changed since then and we are no longer under Curacao but at this time a Country on our own. We need persons with experience beyond that of the Island Receiver Office of SXM to fill such a position.

There are many other positions to be filled at the various sectors of that department (finance is a huge dept.), Mr. Richardson might be able to offer his services in his field of expertise on one of them. All hands on deck is what is needed right now.

We now need young people who not only have the educational background but also the required experience to handle certain positions. The gentleman in question has also served the Govt. of Curacao in the same position as well as with the SOAB.

With reference to the daughter, we cannot doubt you but we also are not aware of the circumstances of why she was not hired. I will note that there have also been quite a number of educated young adults, deep born SXM'rs hired, by Govt., since 10.10.10. Some appointments were in the media, some were not.

However, it does not have to "only" be in Govt. There are many other NGO's who are in need of qualifed persons. Another option is to offer services on an outsource basis, in other words, starting your own independant company, which, in especially the administrative fields, do not require much financial investments. Being independant also teaches you to be dedicated and strong willed. A good example of such is f.i. Mr. Tuitt.

Perhaps the young lady could also look at that possibilty thereby gaining her both the experience and credibility thus making her a suitable candidate for certain positions that will become available over the next few years.
Fine art needs time to ripen.

We have been seeing a trend right now of the same "old" persons filling more than one position simply because we do not have enough young adults who have built up enough experience in their fields and/or are not willing to learn the ropes from those who DO have the necessary experience.

Word of advise:

Don't let that piece of paper go to your head, you must try to aquire the experience that goes hand in hand with the paper.
"Theorie en praktijk"

In closing, I must state that ... unfortunately ..... Govt. cannot hire all persons required in one shot. It is a process. They must first fill the key positions and those persons (dept. heads) can then put their departments in order.

• What???
avatar

Joan and Hiro are cousins for those who do not know, now you know. His grandmother was a Hodge who died in the early 60s. All kind of insinuations left and right. I am glad for the gentleman. So what if he has an Indian background. He was born on the island and was good for Curacao. So why not here. Give me a break. Are we now looking at race.?

• When will we learn
avatar

I guess, nothing government do is good for everyone.

They hired a dutcman for the job, it's a problem, they not hired a me-born-here it's a problem because he's indian, what wrong with you peeps.

When Sarah Wescott, was holding the Finance Manager position hostage for so many years - (nobody never complained, and demanded she resign the function, and stick to her political ambition).

When William Marlin held the Principal position at LCS for all those years, nobody never complained.....

SxM peeps, there are various battles to fight, choose them wisely and bring them forward to the government.

If the (contractual) conditions are satisfactory, any race/national would take the offer. Whether we approve are not, it is a done deal.

If he has such a vast experience, there should be no trouble getting his dept. in order....and at the same time bringing up the staff (sharing his educational backgrond as well as experience with the staff).

The Finance Dept. is not an easy dept. It needs those who understands the instruments by which they must work with (comptabiliteitsverorden, burgerlijk procesrecht, invorderingswet, etc.). It is more than simple administrative work.

I do admit, I would have love to see one of my own (born Sxm-er with Sxm roots) hold the position. There is a difference between a child born here of parents who has a Sxm (cultural) background and a child who is born here of parents that were naturalise, etc.
There is a difference and this difference places a serious role in Government.

Example: I have worked with an Indian who was born in Curacao, studied in Holland and both parents are from India. When it came to decision that had to be made on a cultural matter, he would often make reference to his upbringing (India, his parents) and what he studied in Holland.........As far as he was concern Curacao had no culture.

This is something that I have also come across in my work in SxM......not only from foreigners but also by my very own people who has studied abroad.
Government need people who knows their culture, history, etc. Sadly to say they only have a handful of them but the educational background is lacking.....

• Young SXMners dont know
avatar

Reading the crap as comments here, let me tell you all young SXMners you know nothing.
This young man was born on SXM in the 1960's. His parents with family residing in Curacao lived here on SXM. They owned one of the first tourists shops on Frontstreet. How many of you young ones were born here? Where were your parents in the 1960's?
This young man lived in Saunders next door to Sinclair Matthew, across the street from Irene Hodge. To the back of his house were the Busby's and Irene Hodge-Patterson. SXM in those days were very different than today. Indian children went to Catholic and public schools, they spoke Dutch and English and they integrated in society. Take a look at Curacao, how many Indian families integrated and are a full part of society. Another thing, because SXM started out small, every family can trace their roots to each other. No surprise that Joan Dovale Meit is related to Hiro Shigemoto...So Hiro had a Japanese father, so what. Through his mother he is still a SXMner. Unlike the new wave generation who cannot trace nothing to SXM as both parents come from elsewhere and they refuse to integrate. This statement goes for the new wave Indians as well. Learn from the old generation! I put blame that our own people did not write our history and by that I dont mean the slavery years of 1700's..no one wrote about SXM in the 1960's-1970's and now the new wave think they know it all and that SXM started with them...Wrong young ones..wrong!

Imagine a black St. Maarten couple living in India and have children born there. Would they be perceived as "Indian", so to speak.
If the gentleman is qualified to perform the a**igned tasks, then he should be considered like any other who hold a a pa**port of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
But so imply that he is St. Maartener, cut that nonsense out!!!
He just happens to be born on St. Maarten in a confined community that do not have anything in common with St. Maarteners except place of birth.

• Disgusted by ignorance

I totally agree with "." and Hold up a minute, finally someone saying something that makes sense. Eventhough his parents from India, they paid taxes on the island and offer employment for some of st maarten people so in my opinion, they benefit the island and help to put some of us through school. Let's look pa** that this man is of Indian parents, because obviously Curacao looked beyond that they not only had someone who is an offspring of Indian parents, but also someone who didn't even born there. think about that...

I wonder if he wasnt good friends with Joan and Hiro they would of hired him I guess this gentelman did not aplly for this job but the job went to him by some favorite friends and so I also guess that they are many more indians and others out there with qualifacations that applied for jobs aqnd didnt get hired because they do not have godfathers or mothers in S.X.M. and i guess that mr Ravi would never end up doing Mc Donals Or kentucky jobs like some others that have qualifications but just have to do any type of jobs to be able to pay their BILLS because they wasnt born with a golden spoon in their mouth Mind me its not all black young man that is throwing away their education there is a lot of them that is still good black young men And as Good Luck say every nations have bad and good not only sxm

• Strange!!!
avatar

Born in Curacao not in SXM.

• What happen to unity
avatar

Every St. Maarten day we talking about unity and National Pride. How are we as a nation suppose to prosper when all we are doing is dividing one another. Take the great USA as an example once you have become a citizen you are treated as such and you are encouraged to be patriotic to your new Country. In St.Maarten it is the opposite even though you are born here some people make it their business to make you feel as unwelcome as possible (SMH)

• Stop this nonsense
avatar

Finished his MBA and got the job through the normal application process with more than three other candidates. Also he was born in Curacao but grew up right here. Son of the soil in all senses!!!! Speaks SXM English better then most SXM'ers do and understands and embraces our culture like not many others do or will. Leave the gentleman alone and let him do the job. Criticize him if need be after he has worked for 6 months. All you people don't have anything better do to right now...such as WORK?!

• ignorance cant done
avatar

I am tired of reading about our own black people this and that. How we should reserve jobs for our own black people. SXM was never made up of black people only. Simpson Bay had white people and they are SXMners. Many SXMners are biracial going back for centuries- So stop the black this and black that. The United States of America could have learnt a lot from our people marrying and having children between white and black races. They had MLK preaching sermons in the 60's because southern states refused marriages between different races. Our people have been mixing for centuries. So stop thinking the USA history is ours. We had our own history.

• LOL

@ good luck...you are right. I agree with you! (I know the history)

SXM Good luck getting your finance in order! LOL

• Hold up one minute!!!!!
avatar

@ sad sad sad

Please do not misunderstand my comment. Indeed not all black SXM'rs are dropping out of school ...... Thank God for that.
I know many who are doing great right here in their own Country.

But then again, those who came back or have lived here and either found jobs or started their own businesses are not running around out there hating on others. They are doing what all (young) SXM'rs should be doing .... Making it in life.

Go to all Govt. offices, Airport, Harbor, GEBE, etc. etc. and see who are holding the top positions .... yes SXM'rs or offsprings of SXM'rs. Yes, there are a few others but MOST are of SXM roots. They might not ALL be the BIG bosses but they hold key positions.
However, go to the schools (after school) or on the blocks and see who are the ones hanging around out there complaining.

I am just saying that we all can make it, no matter what your circumstances when small. You have to have the will power and be responsible enough to want to better your life.

You can enjoy Carnival, clubs or whatever else, but have the ambition to want to make it in life.

A big up to some of the "old" boys from the block in St. Peters.
I see many of them now working with Windward Roads and no longer hanging on the blocks complaining and I feel oh so proud of them.

However, I also see a whole new generation hanging around on the block and bringing down the young, spritesy looking school girls with them. IT HAS GOT TO STOP and it starts with the parents and society.

They feel superior to the other kids with the help of our "own" teachers. They only hire our kind in their stores to clean.
To hell with this guy being offended. What about children from here that went to study and cannot get a job moreless any type of position in govt. The whole bunch of you people in govt. are paving the way for Indian takeover, I guess you are paying back for the contributions you received. To pleaser: At least, you are among the few adding a bit of common sense to the debate. The reason we have so much disagreement among 'ourselves' is the following: In keeping with what we have become as a (laid back) people, many of us refuse or ignore a serious dialogue on who is a St. Martiner. This would be the first initiative to take in forging national unity. In any other country, where maturity is the norm -- such discussions would be welcomed, concluded and mentioned in the constitution. When it is convenient to some, they would tell you that they are born here (at times from non-St. Martin parents). On other occasions, the same person would tell you how dumb and backward 'St. Martin people' are -- while he proudly boasts of his non-St. Martin heritage. And then there's this peculiar (discriminatory) practice of certain groups of (original) non-nationals systematically excluding the black St. Martin population -- be it in hiring practices or most social interaction (marriage for instance). We must all -- together -- decide that we will be one people (in everything) or that we will not. We cannot have it both ways! Let's simply be honest with ourselves: the time for emotionalism is long gone. And let's not forget: the reason we have so many nationalities on St. Maarten is that there has always been a 'host'. The 'host' is who let in the 'guests' -- and not the other way around.

@ real talk

Not because it is a "world wide something", should it be acceptable. Especially when it comes to my own people.
I am extremely harsh about it because it hurts reall bad to see some promising young people's lives just going to waste. Everyone is born with a fair chance in life.

You do not have to come from a "rich" or "none black" background to make it in life. You don't have to be a doctor, lawyer or Govt. official to be respected and become a worthwhile person. Many have proven this to be a fact.

I sincerely hope that you don't (if you already have kids) or won't ever tell YOUR children and grandchildren that it IS ok to just sit on the block, being useless ....... because it is a world wide something.

Want better for your own and others. PLEASE!!!!!!!

Some of these children are on the block because teachers would hold the indian child on her lap (slave mentality) and let the black child sit on the floor. Tel me I lie. The Indian child would be call to work on projects while the black child would be sent home with little or no homework, tel me I lie? I go on and on but you teachers know who you are. Today when your children that you "taught" did not come out to anything, please rewind the tape/video? Not racist, just saying the truth.
Not easing up on you parents, whip your children with education and not nice clothes and books that you do not read. Indians got one TV, blacks have three/four. You buying Indian stuff to rob your children of their education. Indians are being rob/kill because you too are at fault for helping these kids to become resentfull. Give them a job, let them feel like you did no only come here to take their land (american indians). Just saying? Food for thought? :o

I have to agree with "Hold up one minute" Parents push your kids, Black, White, Chinese, Indians whatever color you are go to school and get an education so you come back and better yourselves, and stop sitting on the block and behind the computer critizing what other people got, they went to school and got an education for.

It is not to late for you to go to college and educate yourself, and someday you can be where Mr.Ravi is.........and not critizing him.

I just want/need to say this ... my last comment on this article.

Appr. 25 years ago I openly warned of SXM turning into a "little Guyana". It WILL become a reality if we do not change our mentalities and get down on our children. Let us not have a "ltl. Guyana" but rather let us strive to having a Multi Racial Nation of ambitious, powerful, well respected, God Fearing "human beings".

As "Well,Well,Well" said: "It is not to late for you to go to college and educate yourself, and someday you can be where Mr.Ravi is".

I recall that my child, while attending St. Dominic high school (the notorious "Indian School";), received the "student of the month" award ..... 3 times in a row.
She also graduated with awards. (I still have the awards to prove my statement too).

Ra ra .... How could that be????? ....She (we are) is "dark skin" black and I surely am not rich or influential.

How???? She behaved herself and studied damn hard, I did not buy "brand name" clothing and sneakers but I bought decent things that would last until she outgrew them. I had a compu. that SHE COULD use and she had no cell phone. On top of that, I worked long hours but she could not come with no nonesense about she felt "mentally stressed" because she did not have what others had and on top of that I loved her and spent quality time with her THAT'S HOW!!!!!!

And no, she would not have qualified for this position ..... BUT .... She owns her own business .... since the past 5 years and has not yet reached the age of 30. She did not walk around moping about what Govt. did not do for her.

I repeat, everyone has the same opportunities in life .... but don't expect it to be handed to you on a golden platter.

So yes, I have every rights to critisize others who sit back, complain, **tch and hate on others who worked hard for what they want or have.

This is not a color or race thing, this is an ambition, responsibility, determination and hard working thing.

YEP ...... Things that makes you go HHHHHHMMMMMM!!!!!!!
Leave the man (Ravi) in peace to do his job, prove his abilities as a "human being" and all you haterzzzz should concentrate on bettering yourselfs, it can be done.

Good luck.

@ Justice;

Well stated, I agree with you 101%. People need to stop being blind to the facts and start to get with the program, to much ignorance is happening about being a sxmer about who is and who is not. The time spent minding other peoples business and trying to talk bad about them take a look at the situation at hand.

I AM FED UP WITH THE RACIAL BASHING, AND THIS BORN HERE BLACK ST. MAARTEN ATTITUDE. GET REAL PEOPLE. ST. MAARTEN IS A MULTI-CULTURAL SOCIETY, AND DON'T EXPECT IT TO STAY STAGNANT. WE HAVE TO MOVE ON, WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD, OR ELSE WE WILL JUST STAY ON THE ROADSIDE LICKING OUR WOUNDS. CHECK OUT THE CLA ROOMS IN SCHOOLS. WHO DO YOU SEE? CHILDREN OF ALL DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, WITH PARENTS FROM HERE, THE CARIBBEAN, EUROPE, LATIN AMERICA, THE U.S. DON'T THINK THE TIME WILL NOT COME, WHEN OUR POLITICIANS, WILL BE FROM DIFFERENT ETHNIC BACKGROUND. THAT WILL BE FAIR REPRESENTATION FOR ALL CONCERNED LIVING ON THE ISLAND, AND NOT JUST ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE.

Congratulations to Mr.Ravi Daryanani. I wish u much success in your duty to this island and its citizens. Unfortunately these individuals who just started to browse and blog on the internet recently, aren't seeing the bigger picture. the time they spend on sites like these just talking nonsense, they could be bettering there selves and their families. Now they complaining because his an Indian born here with parents born in India. Well much luck with such mentality.

ONE THING IS SORTING WHEN THE DUTCH COME OVER, REMEMBER NOW WE ARE A COUNTRY WITH IN THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS, BEFORE WE WORE PART OF A GROUP OF ISLANDS CALLED NEDERLANDSE ANTILLES. WHAT U CAN SAY TO THEM OR DEMAND FROM THEM. THE ANSWER IS NIETS.

I WOULD URGE U LOCALS WHO OWN LAND TO START BUILDING APARTMENTS, PROPER APARTMENTS SO ARE FELLOW DUTCH BROTHER CAN MOVE IN OR GET READY TO SELL UR LAND TO HIGHEST BITTER. SINT MAARTEN BELONGS MORE TO THE DUTCH NOW THEN IT EVER DID.

ONE THING IS RIGHT WHEN U LEAVE INDIVIDUALS WHO DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT THEY ARE DOING THEY MAKE A MESS. IMAGINE THE DUTCH USED THIS ISLANDS NATURAL RESOURCE WHICH WAS SALT, THEY LEFT IT FOR US LOCALS, US LOCALS JUST DUMBED SHI*T IN IT. SO STOP BRINGING ARE ISLAND AND ITS PEOPLE DOWN.

THE QUESTION IS ARE U READY FOR WHATS UP AHEAD.
ADD UP & DP THE RESULTS WOULD BE " EVERYTHING THAT GOES UP MOST COME DOWN." St.Maarten is glistening jewel, in the wrong hands.

I HOPE U HAVE GRASP SUCH CONCEPT.

Moge God ontferm U over ons allen

The gentleman hold a "so called dutch pa**port" and is entitled to work on St. Maarten.
That does not imply he is "one of us" as they were never part of us. These people live in their own "confined" environment and never even tried to co-mingled with "us".
As long they make mony in St. Maarten, they will tell you that they are St. Maartners too.
Take note of whay happened on the French side, the French Euro's are now in charge. We on the Dutch side still have a chance to determine our own destiny by stop talking about "inclusion".
The man is an Indian who happens to be born in the Dutch Kingdom, and shall never be a St. Maartener, even though he and his people are allowed to co-exist with us.

I do NOT agree that born here native "black" sxm'ers are dropping out of school, etc etc. Shows that you are culturally conditioned to this opinion. A vast majority of local sxm'ers to native parents are educated, so your comment is well off base. And yes, there are ones that aren't but opinions above make it seem as though we are uneducated and dropouts. Get your facts straight. St Maarten people please do not let others to marginalize and continue to speak your mind I'm this your country. My 2 cents.

• Good luck

He was a wanted man on his isle of birth Curacao a few years ago. He worked for a large St. Maarten company shortly thereafter and left 'in a hurry' if you know what I mean.... ;-)

As LOL said: SXM Good luck getting your finance in order! LOL
