A MAN described as a Chinese national is believed to have committed suicide yesterday afternoon, clasping his hands together and then plunging into the sea off the waterfront area of the International Financial Centre, downtown Port of Spain.
The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m.
Up to press time last night, the body had not been found but in the meantime the police kept another Chinese national in custody; he was with the alleged suicide victim at the time he jumped into the sea. He is currently assisting the police with their investigations.
One eyewitness told the Sunday Express that he saw four Chinese men walking along the waterfront when suddenly one of them jumped onto the wall facing the sea, clasped his hands together and jumped into murky waters of the Gulf.
According to this eyewitness, the man stayed afloat for a few seconds, then exhaled and sank into the water.
Two of the other men ran off while police who were on patrol managed to grab a third man.
The Sunday Express understands that the harbour area was dredged prior to the Summit of the Americas conference "so that it must be about 90 feet deep," said one security officer.
The Police and the Coast Guard were eventually called in and a team of Coast Guard divers scoured the waters, beginning their dive shortly after 3 p.m. By press time last night they were still searching for the body.
