The Réserve Naturelle’s managing body (AGRNSM) is calling all vessel operators (captains/skippers) utilizing the Réserve Naturelle commercially or privately to answer an online survey to improve the mooring buoys field for 2024/2025.

mooringbuoys14052024As part of the ReCorEA project*, the non-governmental organization responsible for managing the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de Saint-Martin (the Association de Gestion de la Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Martin, or AGRNSM) is evaluating the uses, needs, and problems faced by the visitors, particularly concerning current use of mooring fields to improve them for 2024/2025. The survey ends on May 22, 2024.

Strengthening the protection of ecosystems and welcoming the public
Saint-Martin’s National Nature Reserve is home to exceptional natural sites and threatened biodiversity. Its first role is to preserve them for future generations. The reserve also allows for the reception of recreational visitors to enjoy and discover the protected area safely and sustainably. Though some sites, including the islands of Pinel and Tintamarre, are already equipped with mooring buoys, the existing gap between the real users’ needs and their current use threatens to further negatively impact the reserve’s biodiversity. T
A plan defined in collaboration with users
The AGRNSM would like to improve the reserve’s mooring buoy fields in collaboration with the users, namely commercial and private vessel operators utilizing the current mooring buoy field. To do so, stakeholder engagement is needed. Questions for participants include: Are there enough buoys? Are they well-located? Are they easy to use? A quick and easy anonymous survey (an estimated 10 to 15-minute commitment) is available online, permitting users to participate easily. For the moment, all potential solutions are being studied. The responses to the survey will serve as a working basis for the development of technical solutions adapted to the real needs of users and the protection of the environment.

llegal Public Dumping Causes Operational Damages to NV GEBE's Transformer Station.

gebetransformer14052024PHILIPSBURG:--- On Monday, May 13, NV GEBE experienced a series of technical difficulties caused by a short circuit explosion at one of the company's transformer stations. These transformer stations are electrical substations that transform the electricity distribution from high/low voltage for distribution to customers, serving a critical role in NV GEBE's operations.
Upon further assessment of the situation, it was detected that residents are illegally dumping garbage in the vicinity of (in front and next to) the company's transformer stations. As a direct result, rodents are attracted, causing an infestation in and around the area. Despite ongoing efforts to close all passageways, it was discovered that the high-voltage section became infested, which caused a short circuit explosion at the transformer station, along with extensive damage to one of the engines.
NV GEBE is kindly asking the public to avoid putting garbage next to or, in close proximity of the transformer stations. It's not only an attraction for rodents, which are prone to causing substantial damage, but it is also a major safety hazard for the technicians who have to work at these locations. Therefore, public cooperation would be greatly appreciated in throwing all garbage and debris into the designated dumping areas. Please do not throw any items in/around NV GEBE's transformer stations. Let's work together to keep the island clean and safe in order to limit the inconvenience it causes to all.
Additionally, kindly note that NV GEBE will be carrying out load shedding at various intervals during this week, which is directly related to last night’s incident. This temporary interruption in power supply is necessary for essential maintenance work to the damaged engine. Affected areas may experience power outages lasting between 60 to 90 minutes on multiple occasions.
We understand the inconvenience that this may cause and sincerely apologize for any disruption to your daily routine. Our team is working diligently to ensure minimal inconvenience and a swift restoration of services. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time.

Warning from the Barbados-based Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF).

The Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) has predicted near-record heat in the Caribbean region from April to September 2024, with particularly hot conditions expected in August and September. This forecast's implications include an increased risk of heat stress among vulnerable populations and small livestock due to high temperatures and rising humidity in September. The need for cooling solutions is expected to rise earlier and faster than in previous years, peaking in August and September.

This forecast predicts an increase in heat compared to previous years up to June 2024, with Barbados projected to experience between thirty (30) and fifty (50) heatwaves.

With the above in mind, please see the below that can assist in the alleviation of feeling the heat:

Drink Plenty Fluids
Water assists in regulating body temperature and allows the body to cool off when the environment gets warmer. Cold water is better, and (according to The Red Cross) one should aim to drink at least three-quarters of a gallon of water a day.

Retreat to Cool Areas
Although air conditioning units are a great additive, not all have access to them. If it is possible to spend two to three hours within public areas that have a cooling space, this measure can help to avoid heat associated illnesses. In addition, one should avoid going outside during the hottest period of the day. As the day progresses to evening, move to the coolest part of your home.

Skip the Cooking
Stock up on foods that are either microwave-ready or can be eaten without any warm preparations. The unnecessary use of your stove during a heat wave can make your living space much warmer.

Plan Outdoor Activities

If you have errands or outdoor chores that require attention, try to do same early or late on evenings to avoid peak temperatures. Stay in the shade where possible if venturing outside.

Stay in Touch

For those of us who have elderly relatives who live alone, check in on them. Their individual ability to regulate body temperature is significantly lowered, and any heat-related illnesses are difficult to detect.

Dress for the Occasion

Wear loose-fitting lightweight clothing made of natural fibers to keep cool. For example, tank tops, light-colored shorts, and t-shirts made of cotton or linen are breathable and will assist in regulating your body temperature. Unlike polyester and other synthetic materials that make you sweat, perspiration becomes stagnant, and you will not cool down. In addition, dark clothing will attract heat.

Watch your Pet/s
If your pet seems listless, unable, or unwilling to move, it may be suffering from the heat. It must go to a Veterinarian immediately.

Recognize the Symptoms

Individual heat tolerance varies; however, prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can begin to make one feel ill. Heat exhaustion is indicated by symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, and digestive issues. Retreat to a cool area, rest, and drink plenty of fluids.

NOTE: Heat stroke is very serious and is characterized by a body temperature over 103°F, red skin that does not produce sweat, a rapid pulse, and confusion. Remember, heat stroke requires immediate medical attention.
