ICC Organisers Raise Concerns Over Littering at Little Bay Beach.

littlebaytrash15102026Little Bay:---  Less than a month after the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), Little Bay Beach is once again littered with trash. During this year's ICC, 180 volunteers collected over 1,554 kilograms of litter and debris from coastal areas across Sint Maarten. Yet it didn't take long for people to start leaving their trash behind again.

Organizers stress that everyone has a personal responsibility to clean up after themselves and respect our natural environment. Government action is equally important and should include stronger enforcement against illegal dumping and the implementation of long-promised measures, such as Plastic Free legislation aimed at reducing single-use plastics. Organizers also raise concerns about what appears to be construction waste and filling material, potentially encroaching on public beach space.

"At a time when access to public beaches is already under increasing pressure from development, it is particularly concerning to see these areas being treated with such disregard. Volunteers should not have to keep cleaning up after those who refuse to take responsibility. Protecting our beaches means not only keeping them accessible to the public, but also taking responsibility for keeping them clean and healthy," organizers state.

Implementing agency to meet NGOs on Saba, Statia and St. Maarten about Legacy to Future Funds.

legcacyfunds15102026PHILIPSBURG:---  Non-profit organizations on Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten will soon be able to receive information and ask questions about the Legacy to Future Funds (officially SUMS-C) directly from the people who implement the scheme and review the applications. Two representatives of Uitvoering van Beleid (UVB), the agency that implements the subsidy scheme, will travel to the three islands next week for a series of in-person information sessions.

The first session takes place on Saba on Monday, October 19, at the E. Johnson Center in Windwardside. It is followed by a session on Statia on Wednesday, October 21, at Boombasticcafe in Oranjestad, and a session on St. Maarten on Friday, October 23, at The Impact Hub in the Foresee Foundation office at Illidge Road 60. All three sessions run from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

The sessions are open to foundations that have already submitted a subsidy application, as well as organizations considering applying. Participants will receive a detailed explanation of the scheme and the financial support it offers, including the different subsidy categories and the types of activities that qualify for funding. Representatives will also explain the conditions and criteria applications must meet, how applications are submitted and assessed, and what financial and content-related reporting is required.

The session will also highlight the upcoming application periods. The second application period for Category 1, which focuses on the professionalization of organizations, opens on November 2, 2026, and closes on January 12, 2027.

UVB, part of the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW), implements the scheme on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). Because the two visiting representatives are directly responsible for reviewing applications, the sessions offer local organizations a valuable opportunity to receive first-hand information and ask questions in person about the criteria, procedures, and assessment.

With these information sessions, Legacy to Future aims to contribute to a better understanding of the subsidy scheme, so that foundations can make well-informed and well-prepared use of the funding opportunities available to them.

Organizations can register for their session at bit.ly/Info-LFF-SSS-Islands or by scanning the QR code on the event flyer.

A 28 year old male arrested for threatening police officers and public safety.

arrest020320206PHILIPSBURG:--- The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) informs the public that on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, officers arrested a 28-year-old male with the initials R.S. in connection with serious threats against police officers and the safety and security of Sint Maarten.

The arrest followed threatening statements made by the suspect, including posts circulated on social media in which he expressed his intention to shoot police officers one by one. The suspect also threatened to take matters into his own hands and made statements about blowing up the country.

KPSM takes these threats very seriously. Threats of violence against law enforcement officers, public institutions, or the wider community are unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Threats of violence are not a solution. They are criminal matters that can carry serious and lasting consequences.

This investigation is ongoing, and we will not share further details at this time.

Six honored as St Maarten hosts regional prison workers week 2026.

prision115102026PHILIPSBURG:--- Correctional personnel from across the Dutch Caribbean and Suriname gathered in Sint Maarten from October 5 to 11 for Prison Workers Week 2026, combining professional exchanges, sporting competitions and cultural celebrations with recognition of six individuals for their service.

Hosted by the Sint Maarten Prison Workers Activities Club under the theme “It’s Time to Shine: Rising Above & Reaching Beyond,” the event welcomed delegations from Curaçao, Bonaire and Suriname, alongside local prison workers and a participant from Aruba’s correctional institution.

The annual gathering gave participants a chance to strengthen regional relationships, share professional experiences, and spend time together away from the demands of correctional work.

Celebrations opened on Monday, October 5, at the Jocelyn Arndell Festival Village. Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling, Prison Director Steven Carty and representatives of the participating countries addressed the gathering, emphasizing regional cooperation and the contributions of correctional personnel.

Parliament Chair Sarah A. Wescot-Williams also attended the opening ceremony, where organizers introduced the six honorees this year’s celebrations were dedicated to. The group comprised four serving staff members and two recent retirees.

Tuesday’s programme featured shooting and softball tournaments, followed on Wednesday by a guided visit to the Pointe Blanche Correctional Institution and the House of Detention.

Representatives of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) presented information about the new prison project during the visit. The programme gave visiting delegations an opportunity to learn more about Sint Maarten’s correctional facilities and operations.

A volleyball competition followed that evening, while Thursday and Friday focused on recreational and social activities that encouraged participants to exchange experiences and build connections.

Prison Workers Day was officially observed on Saturday, October 10, beginning with a service at the Methodist Church in Philipsburg.

Reverend Javid Intiaz delivered a sermon organizers described as inspiring and memorable, and participants continued discussing its message throughout the day. Governor Ajamu Bailey attended the service.

Participants then marched through Philipsburg to the Government Administration Building before attending the official ceremony at the ALEEZE Convention Center.

Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling and prison directors from the participating countries addressed the ceremony, which included an exchange of appreciation tokens and formal recognition of the six honorees:

  • Amparo Sabina-Martina
  • Marisol Wilson
  • Julia Ambrosina
  • Marjonette Reenis-Cathlin
  • George Adamus
  • Selvin Williams

The honorees were recognized for their dedication, professionalism, and contributions to the correctional institution.

prison215102026Speaking on behalf of prison management, Director Steven Carty thanked Activities Club President Andricia Arrendell-Richardson, her organizing team, volunteers and supporting staff for making the week possible.

Arrendell-Richardson thanked those who contributed funding, materials, practical assistance, and other support. She said organizing the event required determination, teamwork, and personal sacrifice, especially in overcoming the challenges along the way.

A luncheon followed the ceremony. That evening, participants returned to ALEEZE for the Grand Prison Workers Dance, wearing royal blue, gold, white, and black to match the celebratory theme.

The week concluded on Sunday, October 11, with a closing gathering at the Jocelyn Arndell Festival Village, where competition winners received trophies and visiting delegations shared a final evening with their hosts.

Organizers extended special thanks to representatives of the Police Force, VKS, Customs, Youth Brigade and Immigration Department for their participation and support.

They also recognized Norwin Reenis, Omaira Gario, Ronald Lake, Lidia Richardson, Nancy Maria and the staff members who maintained prison operations throughout the celebrations.

They also extended appreciation to the Minister of Justice, her Cabinet, the Staff Bureau, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participating correctional management teams.

Established in Curaçao in 1984, Prison Workers Week has brought regional correctional personnel together for more than four decades. The next edition is scheduled for October 2027, with another participating country set to host.

Organizers said the successful Sint Maarten gathering reinforced the importance of recognizing and supporting the people who maintain safety and order in correctional institutions.
