Department of Statistics (STAT) Conducting Mapping Project.

The Department of Statistics (STAT) in collaboration with the Ministry of VROMI is currently collecting data on the Dutch side of St. Maarten, to update the Geographic Information System (GIS) of government.

This initiative entails collecting & recording up-to-date information on the location and function of each building on Dutch St. Maarten. This includes for example, registering the address, type of building (i.e. residence, commercial, church, school etc.), the number of floors & units of each building, and some other general information.

The project commenced this week and is projected to run until March 2013.

With an updated GIS, the government of St. Maarten and STAT will have access to a current map of St. Maarten, with proper street-names, and building-function data. This can serve many purposes, in particular for STAT, it will assist with determining the coverage of the Population Census, facilitate the fieldwork process on future sample-based surveys as well as
provide a basis for spatial analysis.

The Department wishes the general public to be informed of this undertaking, and thanks persons in advance for co-operating with its staff members, should they be approached, in connection with this project.
