Cft, SBTNO, and DCAA organize seminar: “Checks and Balances in Corporate Governance on Curaçao.”

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao:--- The Board of financial supervision (College financieel toezicht - Cft), the Foundation Bureau for Supervision and Standardization Government Entities (Stichting Bureau Toezicht en Normering Overheidsentiteiten - SBTNO) and the Dutch Caribbean Accountants Association (DCAA) are organizing a seminar on Thursday afternoon February 21st 2013 at the Kurá Hulanda, titled: "Checks and Balances in Corporate Governance op Curaçao". The objective of the seminar is to enhance the awareness concerning the Corporate Governance Code and to shed light on the obligations of governmental corporations and foundations. The controller function of the external accountant will also be discussed.

Speakers
During the seminar various speakers from the respective organizations will be discussing topics concerning the theme. On behalf of the Cft, Erik van Engelen and Marloes Kempes will be giving a presentation about the role of the financial supervisor with regard to Corporate Governance. Donald de Palm (SBTNO) will be discussing the tasks and activities of the SBTNO and the obligations of the government and the entities in this. André Delger (DCAA) will explain the role of the external accountant, the legal task resulting from the Code and the importance of a uniformity approach and reporting by the different accounting offices. Guest speaker Karel Frielink will conclude with a speech concerning the present and future of the Code.

Interest
Cft, SBTNO, and DCAA have common interests for stimulating compliance with the regulation and the Code and also achieve a spin-off with the organizing of this seminar. For Cft this concerns the improvement of the compliance with the Corporate Governance rules and regulations; SBTNO focuses on the enhancement of the knowledge and awareness for directors and commissioners in the area of Corporate Governance rules and regulations in general and specifically for the controller function of the accountant; and for DCAA this means uniformity in the application of the rules and regulations and the usage of best practices and standardized text for reporting and declarations by its members.

Role of the organizers
Each of the three organizations has a different role concerning Corporate Governance. Cft has the role to identify and advise on the determination and execution of the budgets, the improvements of the financial management and the control over the total money loans. The SBTNO is an independent organization which by request or on own initiative gives advice to the Council of Ministers of Curaçao concerning the compliance with Corporate Governance on Curaçao. DCAA is an association which amongst other things stimulates its (accountant) members to execute their profession properly, safeguards the common interests of its members and promotes an interest in executing the accountancy profession, while it strives for good service in the area of financial reporting.

The seminar will be held on Thursday February 21st, 2013 at the Kurá Hulanda from 13:30 – 17:30 hours. Entrance is free and the instruction language is Dutch. The seminar focuses especially on commissioners and directors of the governmental entities and accountants on Curaçao. Naturally other interested persons are also welcome.
