"Healthy debate and discussion is an integral part of any democracy."
Philipsburg:--- The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams commended and congratulated two events held over the weekend discussing the issue of electoral reform. The first was held at the Philipsburg Cultural Center and was organized by the New Era Foundation and the Concordia Political Alliance Friday's event asked the question on whether or not a change to the electoral system would help or hinder the electoral process. The second event, attended by the Prime Minister, was a debate organized by the St. Maarten Toastmasters Area Council and discussed whether or not electoral reform is necessary in the political environment of the Country.
"Healthy debate and discussion is an integral part of any democracy and I compliment the organizers of both events in the organization of these two very important items that are extremely important to the political development of our new country. Although I was not able to attend Friday's event I did attend the Toastmaster's debate on Sunday and I am encouraged by the interest that the population is showing in the constitutional development of our young democracy," commented the PM.
The Prime Minister has been a long-term proponent of electoral reform, taking the forefront in calling for changes to St. Maarten's electoral system.
