Historically the Moravian Church, Evangelische Broeder Gemeente (EBG), has played an important role in the peaceful implementation of Emancipation in all Dutch territories. Until today the EBG still plays a leading role in organizing observance activities. This year we celebrate 150 years of Emancipation.
On this occasion we, the Moravian Church Immanuel of Sint Maarten, plan to observe this important day by organizing several events between 22 June and 1 July 2013.
We will kick-start the celebration with a workshop to teach people about the head ties scarf from Suriname and to train them in tying and wearing the head tie scarf as is traditionally done. This will take place on Saturday 22nd June 2013 from 9 AM – 2:30 PM at the Immanuel Moravian Church Multipurpose Center, Dominica Road 10, Madame Estate.
The activity will be followed by a lecture on slavery – emancipation – immigration and integration. This will take place on Monday 24th June 2013, from 7 – 9 PM at the Immanuel Moravian Church Multipurpose Center.
On Sunday 30th June 2013, we will be having a special church service on the subject. The service will be led by pastor Rev. Cortroy Jarvis. The time is 10 – 11:30 AM also at the Immanuel Moravian Church Multipurpose Center
On the big day, July 1st 2013, we will join the Department of Culture in their celebration program. We will be participating in the Cultural Parade and the festivities thereafter by offering to the public little bites of traditional Surinamese food.
The Moravian Church Immanuel consists of a mix of members from different countries, predominantly from Suriname and Holland.
