Says Social Environment of Students Also Plays a Role
PHILIPSBURG:--- The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams commented on Friday on the issue of low passing rates in both the Sundial and Milton Peters Schools. The Prime Minister received the information on the low passing rates and ensured that Education Officials will be taking up the issue within the next few weeks
"I am sure in the coming weeks Education Officials will be evaluating and analyzing the results. Clearly from the first indications the results are not encouraging and if you take into consideration that these results come from an educational system that has been changed previously we need to take stock of where we are.
All of the factors will be evaluated and taken into consideration to come to a way forward. Some education officials have made the matter of the language a part of the reason and I am sure that that plays a role, but I am also sure that various other factors also play a role," stated the PM
The Prime Minister also stated that external factors outside of the school system should also be taken into consideration, external factors which have an effect on the success of students. "When you hear the stories about the students you realize that it is much more that just about the schools. Circumstances in home life are sometimes very taxing and how the students overcome those circumstances. It is not only about schools and the educational system but we also need to realize that it is also about our students in the community and in their homes and what they face there," concluded the Prime Minister.
