PHILIPSBURG (DCOMM):--- On June 4th, 2014, during its 22nd plenary meeting, the Financial Intelligence Unit Sint Maarten was inducted into the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs).
This international organization consists of 147 FIUs worldwide. The FIU receives and analyses unusual transactions and in the case a suspicion of money laundering or terrorist financing arises, the FIU disseminates a suspicious transactions report to the public prosecutor's office.
The Egmont Group of FIUs offers training and technical assistance opportunities for the FIU to strengthen its capabilities. It also serves as a platform for the exchange of information between the FIUs.
In 2014 the yearly plenary meeting of the Egmont Group took place in Lima, Peru, at which meeting the Director of the FIU, Ligia Stella, was present.
