PHILIPSBURG:--- On Saturday September 6th 2014, board members and volunteers of the Sint Maarten Alzheimer Foundation started this month's Dementia Prevention Awareness campaign. The month of September is observed worldwide as World Alzheimer's Month. This year awareness is focused on "how to reduce the risks of getting dementia".
More than 200 persons who went to shop at Le Grand Marche, Cul de Sac or at Kooyman at AC Brouwers Road stopped to get information from the volunteers from the Alzheimer's Foundation. The team of volunteers at each location consisted of family caregivers of a loved one with dementia and of one "dementia expert": a person living with dementia. When the persons living with a dementia condition shared their experience of how it is to live with dementia, visitors asked questions and got answers. Leaflets were distributed with information and tips on how to reduce the risk of getting dementia and on what to do when you have two or more of the 10 signs of dementia. The kids got a World Alzheimer's Month balloon.
Quite some shoppers bought tickets for a family fun day buffet on World Alzheimer's Day, Sunday, September 21, at the Emilio Wilson Estate.
