PHILPSBURG:--- A group of 20 Tzu Chi volunteers helped clean eight classrooms and sections of the compound at Methodist Agogic Center (MAC) Browlia Milliard Campus, which was in a terrible state with muddy slush on the lower levels following the torrential rains over the weekend.
After receiving a call to assist in the clean up efforts on Sunday, November 9, the Foundation mobilised the group of volunteers on short notice to assist at the school. One of the volunteers - Bradly Attyl - had been celebrating his birthday, but cancelled his plans to help clean to school to minimise disruption of classes.
Several persons from the Fire Department as well as some teachers were also on hand to assist at the school.
Tzu Chi took cleaning products and cleaning supplies to help in the cleanup efforts. The Foundation also provided drink, water, juice and snacks for persons who assisted in the benevolent effort.
Tzu Chi Commissioner Sandra Cheung said we should use every disaster as a learning lesson for ourselves and our children. She was very grateful that Tzu Chi was able to mobilise its volunteers in a short period to help. The youngest volunteer was an enthusiastic four year old, who had a fun time helping under the guidance of adults. Cheung was heartened to see Attyl give up his birthday plans to help out.
She said Tzu Chi's Founder Master Cheng Yen teaches us that there are two things that should not be delayed: doing good things; repaying our parents and using our bodies to do good deeds. She said volunteer Attyle achieved all of these on his birthday.
She thanked all volunteers for coming out on short notice to assist the school and was happy that the clean up efforts had been completed by the end of the day Sunday.
