PHILIPSBURG:--- On the 22nd of June, 13 AUC students and teachers spent their Saturday helping the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) with much-needed facility maintenance. They painted the Short & Long stay rooms, used for the clients that benefit from guided living. They painted the so-called white room (which is now actually white again) used for training and meetings and helped reorganize the Arts & Crafts Room.
Community action day has been a tradition for over ten years at AUC medical school. Physicians-in-training go beyond the campus three times per year to engage with community partners through service projects focusing on health, education, environmental awareness and more. One of the projects for this semester was the beautification of the MHF facility. This also provided them with an idea of how the MHF looks and works on the inside, which can be interesting and beneficial for medical students since the areas often overlap. One of the volunteers also expressed that she signed up for this specific project because the recent informational videos on the MHF Facebook piqued her interest!
The Mental Health Foundation likes to express its gratitude for the hard work of these 13 volunteers, and AUC for their community service and involvement for now and in the past.
As the founders of Community Action day (Drs. Emmanuel Ofori and Beatrice Kenol) said: ‘’be the change that you want to see in the world.’’
