PHILIPSBURG:--- In a highly anticipated move and on the strength of the electorate asking him to run again, former Member of Parliament Rolando Brison is set to make a comeback in the political arena by contesting the August 19 Parliamentary election as he announced on his weekly radio program "You Have The Word".
Brison, who is widely recognized as the MP with the most legislative accomplishments in the island's history with a stabilizing presence in Parliament, is poised to bring his nuanced and well-researched arguments back to the forefront of St. Maarten's political discourse. He will be running with the United People's Party.
True to his reputation, he already has two significant proposals ready for public presentation. While the full details of these proposals are yet to be unveiled, Brison has announced what they are and, as expected, they reflect Brison's commitment to think outside of the box and deliver impactful governance.
The first proposal involves the abolishment of taxes on tips (gratuities), particularly within the hospitality sector. Brison explained that many employees do not currently declare their tips, leading to unnecessary administrative costs. By removing this tax, he argues, the economy would benefit from increased spending power, which in turn would boost turnover tax revenues without the need for direct taxation on tips.
"The spending power of individuals will have a cumulative effect within the economy," Brison stated. "By allowing people to keep their tips untaxed, we can stimulate economic growth and simplify the tax administration process."
The second proposal focuses on relieving the tax burden on pensioners. Brison advocates for eliminating income tax for those receiving social pensions, emphasizing that the revenue generated from taxing these pensions is minimal compared to the relief it would provide.
Further expanding on his commitment to seniors, Brison announced a comprehensive care package to be implemented in his next four-year term. This package includes subsidies for utilities, rent, and food purchases for seniors, achieved through partnerships with GEBE and retailers. These measures aim to ensure that seniors receive the best possible prices, with tax incentives provided to participating companies.
"This care package will be a significant step in ensuring that our seniors live comfortably and with dignity," Brison emphasized. "It is both a realistic and compassionate approach that balances government support with practical collaborations."
The former MP is also focused on other pressing issues, including GEBE, which he assured has his undivided attention, and his plan will be presented in a comprehensive and clear manner. he also proposes a gradual and responsible increase in the hotel tax, which is currently one of the lowest in the Caribbean, while keeping it below the regional average. A plan for public housing, finally addressing teacher issues, and a "no child left behind" approach becomes the norm of governing.
Throughout his previous term, Brison demonstrated a commitment to stability that extended beyond personal ambition. He played a crucial role in maintaining the cohesion of the former government for four years, often prioritizing the needs of his coalition. His drive to present policy proposals so early in the campaign underscores his readiness.
In a recent viral video, one of Brison's supporters showed alot of optimism about his potential impact. "Rolando Brison is a proven leader with a track record of getting things done," one supporter remarked. "His ability to navigate complex issues and bring about tangible results is exactly what St. Maarten needs right now. We need to bring back Brison".
