Government pushes for consumer relief on electricity and water Prices.

lucmercelina05032025PHILIPSBURG:--- Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina has provided an update on government efforts to bring relief to consumers facing high electricity and water costs. Responding to questions about the motion passed by Parliament earlier this year, which called for action on consumer relief, the government has engaged in a detailed review of energy expenses and pricing mechanisms.

To address the concerns, the Bureau Telecommunications and Post (BTP) of St. Maarten, in collaboration with the regulatory agency from Curaçao (RAC), has been actively involved in analyzing the pricing structure. The RAC, with its expertise in supervising fuel, electricity, and water prices, played a key role in guiding the process. Prime Minister Mercelina emphasized the complexity of the task, which required extensive coordination and research involving GEBE and several other stakeholders.

The government held three sessions with regulatory experts and conducted in-depth investigations to gain access to critical organizational data.

Meetings were held with various entities, including Harbour regarding throughport fees and SOL on fuel calculations. Internal government departments and other stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Seven Seas also contributed to the process.

Prime Minister Mercelina confirmed that the final report on pricing structures and recommendations would be delivered on May 22, 2025. “This report will provide us with the necessary proposals and solid arguments to approach GEBE and other stakeholders with precise instructions on reducing electricity and water prices,” he explained.

The Prime Minister stressed that the government aims to present a well-founded and comprehensive plan to GEBE in June. The proposals will incorporate insights from the report, and the government will ensure that all instructions and justifications are backed by thorough research.

“It is a tedious process, but one that is necessary to make informed decisions that directly benefit the people of St. Maarten,” he said. He also acknowledged the challenges in expediting the process but expressed confidence that the proposals would be ready within the projected timeline.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to alleviating the financial burden on citizens and ensuring fair and transparent pricing for essential services like electricity and water. With concrete measures set to be outlined next month, residents can look forward to potential relief in the near future.
