MP York pushes for national awareness campaign on women’s reproductive health.

yorkmotion23062025PHILIPSBURG:--- In a significant move to address women’s reproductive health issues, Member of Parliament (MP) Darryl York tabled a motion in Parliament on Monday, June 23, 2025. The motion calls for a national public awareness campaign focusing on conditions such as fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis. These conditions, often undiagnosed or untreated, have been identified as a growing concern for women in Sint Maarten.

The Case for Action

The motion highlights alarming statistics and the economic toll of these conditions. According to the St. Maarten Medical Center’s (SMMC) 2023 report, fibroids were found in 40% of women seen by the gynecology department. Additionally, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) estimates that PCOS affects 10–20% of women of reproductive age. At the same time, global data suggests that up to 10% of Caribbean women may suffer from endometriosis, with many unaware of their condition.

Untreated, these conditions lead to chronic pain, infertility, missed work, and avoidable emergency surgeries. Local data reveals that over 12,000 workdays are lost annually, and nearly XCD 2 million is spent on preventable surgeries. MP York emphasized that these issues not only affect women’s health but also have a significant economic and social impact on the community.

Building on Success

darrylyork09062025The motion highlights the success of previous public health campaigns, such as the breast cancer awareness initiative from 2020 to 2023, which resulted in a 40% increase in screenings. It also acknowledges the commendable efforts of local organizations, such as the Positive Foundation and the Sint Maarten Women’s Alliance. However, MP York noted that these NGOs require consistent financial and institutional support to expand their reach and impact.

Resolutions for Change

The motion resolves to:

  • Request the Minister of Public Health (VSA) to design and implement a national awareness campaign for fibroids, PCOS, and endometriosis through media, workshops, and community outreach.
  • Partner with medical professionals, clinics, and civil society organizations to ensure accurate and accessible information reaches women across all districts.
  • Research and allocate necessary funding in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
  • Reflect the campaign in the 2026 national budget as part of the government’s long-term health strategy.
  • Integrate reproductive health education into existing health programs to ensure sustained access to vital information and support.

Commitment to International Standards

The motion is anchored in Sint Maarten’s regional and international commitments, including obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the OECS 2025 Reproductive Health Strategy. These agreements call for better education, access, and support for women facing reproductive health challenges.

A Call to Action

MP York’s motion underscores the urgent need for structured awareness and early intervention to address women’s reproductive health issues. By leveraging partnerships, securing funding, and integrating education into long-term health strategies, the government aims to create a healthier and more informed community.
