PHILIPSBURG:--- Staff of Judicial and Institutional Services (J&IS) accompanied six young male residents of the J&IS Youth Residential Home to the launch of Castel Abraham’s book, “The Healing Man,” on Sunday, November 1, at the Belair Community Center in Cay Hill. Member of Parliament Sjamira Roseburg sponsored their attendance.
Under the theme “Healing the Inner Boy So the Man Can Thrive,” the event explored how childhood experiences can influence emotions, behavior and relationships. It encouraged honest conversations about personal struggles, responsibility and seeking help.
During the discussion, Abraham shared how therapy helped him recognize patterns in his behavior and understand their connection to his childhood experiences. He spoke about accepting feedback, acknowledging mistakes and taking responsibility for change. He also reflected on the role of faith, professional support and honest communication in his healing journey.
A central message was that men and boys do not have to face their struggles alone. Asking for help, acknowledging mistakes and learning to respond differently were presented as steps towards healthier relationships.
Speaking directly to young people, Abraham encouraged them to pause and assess where they are, how they feel, and where they want to go. He suggested writing down their goals and identifying trusted people who could help them work towards those goals. The conversation also addressed identity, anger, rejection, peer pressure and uncertainty about the future. His message reinforced that young people do not have to face challenges alone.
The event also featured a panel of men, including Giovanni Olivacce, Jamal Newton, Patrick Maccow, Charles Thomas, Dominique Cabey and Ralph Cantave, who discussed, among others, abuse, addiction, relationships and intimacy. They shared experiences and information about support and resources available to men and women on St. Maarten.
Psychologist Zoya Hyman and Dr. Tasheena Thomas-Maccow moderated the discussion, guiding conversations on sensitive subjects and inviting reflection. Master of Ceremonies, Audra Cabey, skilfully guided the programme, kept the audience engaged and connected the different segments of the evening.
The topics discussed relate to the guidance J&IS provides to young people in residential care. Recognizing emotions, managing frustration, respecting boundaries and understanding healthy relationships form part of their development. Hearing men speak openly about vulnerability and accountability offered the residents examples of how adults can acknowledge difficulties and seek support.
The event also provided a starting point for further conversations about identity, anger, rejection, peer pressure, and future goals. These discussions can help young people reflect on their choices and identify the support they need.
Following the event, J&IS submitted a request for a session between Mr. Abraham and the young people of the Youth Residential Home. The proposed session would give the minors who attended a chance to ask questions and explore the themes discussed in a setting that allows for more direct interaction.
J&IS thanks Member of Parliament Sjamira Roseburg for sponsoring the group’s attendance. The organization also extends its appreciation to Castel Abraham, the panelists, moderators, Master of Ceremonies and organizers for creating space for these conversations.
J&IS remains committed to connecting young people with opportunities that support reflection, responsibility and personal development.
