WICLU to go after Employment Agencies --- Says workers are being Exploited.

Philipsburg:--- The President of the Windward Island Chamber of Labour Unions Theophillus Thompson expressed concerns on a current trend which he intends to discuss with government. Thompson made the statements during the union's press briefing on Thursday. Thompson said recently the unions on St. Maarten have noticed that employers are no longer hiring new workers instead they are turning to the employment agencies on St. Maarten whom he said are operating against the law.
Thompson said St. Maarten never signed on to the ILO convention which would allow employment agencies to provide workers for companies. He further explained that because of the current trend, workers on St. Maarten would no longer have job security. "There will no longer be permanent job for locals and persons residing on the island legally. Furthermore, these employment agencies are exploiting workers. They don't provide health care benefits and the workers' taxes are not being paid."
