Board and Executive Members of the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association and the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce met on August 21st, at SHTA office. During the meeting both organizations expressed concerns over several troubling issues on St. Maarten which have their attention including, the underperforming economy and the severe decline in the investment climate and the consequences for the local (labor) markets thereof. In addition to the uncertainty regarding rumored changes in the tax system, the need of a simplified system and increased compliance – reportedly at a lowly 36% - rather than increasing taxes as a means of generating more revenue.
