Of the 75 students who wrote the CSEC exams as well as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Dutch through the University of Cambridge, 74 (99%) obtained passes in more than eight subjects and one, secured passes in six subjects. Most colleges require five passes at grades I, II and III.
"As expected all of the students were successful. This represents a passing rate of 100 per cent," said Principal Shareed Hussain.
A breakdown of the results shows that two students obtained passes in 12 subjects, 14 students passed 11 subjects, 24 students passed 10 subjects, an equal number passed nine subjects, and 10 students passed eight subjects.
Hussain, who released the official statistics at the Heads of Department Meeting Tuesday, said he is very proud of the results as all candidates passed outright at one sitting of the examination.
The subjects with the strongest showings were Physics and Integrated Science with 100 per passes; followed by Principles of Business, Social Studies, and English B with 98, 97, and 94 per cent passes, respectively. Other subjects with a high percentage of passes included Biology (90%), Human and Social Biology (89%), Information Technology (88%), Chemistry (85%), English A (81%) and Spanish (80%).
There were many outstanding performances. Suaad Mohammed, from the Science Stream secured grade one in seven subjects, namely Biology, Chemistry, English A, English B, Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and Physics; and grade two in Information Technology, Social Studies and Spanish.
Also performing well from the Science Stream were Linedia Masson, Diedra Murphy, and Julique Hodge. Masson copped six grade ones in Biology, Chemistry, French, Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and Physics, and grade two in English A, Information Technology, Social Studies and Art; while Murphy scored grade one in English A, English B, Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and Physics, grade two in Biology, Chemistry, and Social Studies, and two threes in Information Technology and Spanish.
Hodge, meanwhile, was awarded grade one passes in Physics, Human and Social Biology, and Mathematics; and grade two passes in Chemistry, Biology, Spanish, Information Technology, Social Studies, English A, and English B.
The top four performing Business students were Glory Waakzaam, Nikita Mukhi, Jamila Boirard, and Sahaira Hughes. Waakzaam copped grade one in English A, English B, and Principles of Business, and grade two in Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Principles of Accounts, Social Studies and Spanish, as well as a grade three in Human and Social Biology.
Mukhi, meanwhile, secured grade one passes in Mathematics, English A, and Integrated Science; grade two in Geography, Principles of Business, Information Technology, and Social Studies, as well as grade three in Spanish and Principles of Accounts. Boirard copped three ones in Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts and Social Studies; grade two in Information Technology, Integrated Science and Mathematics; and grade three in English A, Geography and Spanish.
Hughes was awarded grade one in Principles of Business and Social Studies; grade two in English A, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Principles of Accounts; and grade three in History and French.
Since its inception in 1986, the St. Maarten Academy has had a great reputation of students excelling at these examinations, Hussain said. "Last year's group was no exception. They maintained the tradition of excellence at the St. Maarten Academy. They must be congratulated for such outstanding achievement. The teachers did a great job!"
