French and Dutch Close to Signing Transnational Cooperation Agreement.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Prime Minister of St. Maarten Sarah Wescot Williams announced on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers' weekly press briefing that the technocrats have been working very closely to ensure that St. Maarten/St. Martin structures themselves properly in order to make use of the European funding that is available to them. She said in the beginning the idea was to look specifically for transnational cooperation but they realized that they could have looked for a project that would benefit both sides of the island which would allow both sides of the island to access the available funding. Therefore the government of both sides have selected the joint waste water treatment facility as a project as well as the environmental and economical development and study of the Simpson Bay Lagoon.
"Our hope is that when the study is completed they would be able to identify a project for the Simpson Bay lagoon. A final meeting on these topics is expected to be held on June 4th, 2014 and at that time the signing of the agreement should take place, shortly after which they will be presenting the joint projects to the European Union to obtain the necessary funding."
