University of St. Martin (USM) announces its Summer Program.

PHILIPSBURG:--- In light of the growing interest in Politics on the island, USM will recommence with the course
"Introduction to Political Science". The Political Science Course at USM is intended to introduce politics both as a field of study and as an art of science of governance. The idea is to help students better understand the environment in which political decisions are made and governments operate. The course will begin by discussing theoretical and analytical structures in which to approach questions about political and government and will move onto clarifying basic concepts used in the study of politics. Throughout the course emphasis will be placed on developing analytical skills and understanding of methodological tools that will help students analyze political issues. The course will be instructed by Drs. Khalilah Peters, Khalilah is the Political Science instructor at USM and Acting Head of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Government of St. Maarten.

USM is also introducing a course on "Caribbean Nationalism".
This course places the Caribbean at the center of global historical developments over the past five centuries. Students will explore the central role that the Caribbean played in the creation of transatlantic empires; its role as a devourer of African labor and the site where African-American cultures first formed; and its role in shaping the Cold War and contemporary social and political institutions. Students will be equipped to understand the Caribbean Region, its position in relation to the rest of the world, cultural expressions and identity, the impact of dominant ideologies and individuals who have had impact on leadership in the Caribbean and the different ideologies that have shaped integration and the development of the Caribbean Region.
Students will be encouraged to examine the tasks of leadership which will encourage them to critically evaluate the impact of dominant ideologies, and of individuals who have provided leadership in the Caribbean. The instructor for this course will be Ms. Nicole Jacoberger; Ms. Jacoberger is an Adjunct Professor of the St. Johns University School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, New York.

Other courses to run during the summer are: Business Software Applications, English Skills, Reading & Vocabulary Improvement and Beginning Algebra. Summer courses are scheduled to run from the 2nd of June to the 25th of July. The general public is invited to participate in the upcoming Summer program.
