MP De Weever registers to volunteer for SXM DOET.

PHILPSBURG:----  Member of Parliament (MP) the Honorable Cornelius De Weever has registered to volunteer in the second annual SXM DOET volunteer campaign. MP De Weever has registered to volunteer with the Home Away From Home Foundation on Friday March 11th and with the Down Syndrome Foundation of St. Maarten on March 12th.

Home Away from Home ‘Taking Care of the Golden Age’ Foundation will be bringing a group of senior citizens on a field trip to both the Butterfly Farm and the St. Maarten Zoo. Many elderly persons in our community live alone and don’t often get a chance to interact with other so this activity will give the seniors an opportunity to venture outdoors, have lunch and enjoy a day of social conversation with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.

Down Syndrome St. Maarten & Caribbean Foundation will be hosting a collaborative project with Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu St. Maarten to provide persons with Down syndrome safety techniques, self-defense, first aid and other skills and activities.

“Providing a helping hand to vulnerable or challenged populations is our responsibility as members of this community. Incorporating service into our daily lives sets the example for children and creates a legacy with respect to caring for other people,” said MP De Weever.

SXM DOET, is a Kingdom-wide community service campaign that aims to lend a helping hand to active organizations and community projects on Sint Maarten that need it most. Last year it was a great success with over 35 projects and 1000 volunteers participating to make a change. On 11 & 12 March 2016 the island-wide annual SXM DOET event will be back again and currently there are over 40 projects registered.

Interested volunteers should register at any of the still remaining projects at www.sxmdoet.com or by calling 580-1437 for more information.
