Wuite encourages strong ECYS participation in SXM Doet.

jwuite17012018PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport (ECYS) Jorien Wuite strongly encourages all organizations, especially all schools, sport, and cultural organizations to register with the SXM Doet campaign and make use of the up to $1000 available to execute a project of their choosing.

SXM Doet is scheduled to take place on March 9th and 10th. The yearly event sponsored by the Oranje Fonds is the largest volunteer event in the Dutch Kingdom. Due to the increased challenges facing the island after the passing of Hurricane Irma an increase has been made to the usual $650 available.

Minister Wuite states, “We need to make use of every opportunity to rebuild our precious island bit by bit, project by project. Total estimated damages to our schools, sporting facilities, and cultural monuments stand at approximately 60 million US dollars and unfortunately, there will not be enough from the insurance claim to cover these damages. The assistance from the Netherlands via the World Bank will help to alleviate some of that burden but that would also not be enough. We therefore need to make use of every opportunity possible to restore or rebuild our schools, monuments, and facilities We are a nation of doers so this is the perfect opportunity to display our resiliency as a people. It starts with us. I urge everyone to not only register but to participate and volunteer as well."
The funding request deadline is January 31st and applications can be completed through the SXM Doet website, http://www.sxmdoet.com.
