PHILIPSBURG:--- The criminal investigation into the fatal traffic accident involving a toddler on Saturday, August 20, 2016, in front of the Princess Juliana International Airport Arrival hall is still ongoing. The toddler ran across the street and was struck by a passing shuttle bus. He died at the scene from the injuries suffered.
The driver of the shuttle bus, as well as the father of the diseased child, have been heard as suspects in the investigation. No arrests have been made.
Regarding the shuttle bus driver, after studying the images and hearing witnesses it cannot be established as yet that, in a criminal sense, he is to blame for the fatal accident.
The subject of the current criminal investigation concerning the father, who is also considered a suspect, is whether his actions (leaving his children alone behind in the car) make him criminally culpable.
Stafrechtelijk onderzoek naar dodelijk ongeluk gaande
Het strafrechtelijk onderzoek naar het dodelijk ongeluk voor de aankomsthal van de Princess Juliana International Airport op 20 Augustus 2016 is nog steeds gaande. Hierbij verloor een peuter het leven. Het jongetje rende de straat op terwijl er een shuttle bus voorbij kwam rijden.
Zowel de chauffeur van de bus als de vader van het jongetje zijn als verdachten gehoord in het onderzoek. Er zijn geen arrestaties verricht.
Ten aanzien van de chauffeur kan (na het bestuderen van de beelden en het horen van getuigen) voorlopig niet worden vastgesteld dat hem in strafrechtelijke zin enig verwijt te maken valt.
Of het handelen van de vader (het alleen achterlaten van zijn kinderen in de auto) strafrechtelijk verwijtbaar is, is ook op dit moment onderwerp van het strafrechtelijk onderzoek.
