Airport:--- A bicycle rider that was transported in critical condition by ambulance to the St. Maarten Medical Center for emergency treatment died as a result of the injuries he sustained when he was hit off his bicycle on the Airport Road. SMN News learned that the rider was hit by a Black Vitara, then it hit into a GEBE meter box on the Airport road. According to information SMN News received the victim is of Dutch nationality identified as Bas De Haan (29) who is a school teacher at the Milton Peters College. Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson confirmed that a bicycle rider got hit off his bicycle and he was transported to the St. Maarten Medical Center in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Henson said at the moment the police are conducting their investigation and as soon as he gets more information he will release it. Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the female driver of the Vitara was driving at high speed while overtaking a number of vehicles, but when she got back into the lane she hit de Haan. The eyewitnesses said that the victim went airborne when he was hit in the vicinity of the Red Cross on Airport Boulevard. It is clear that the victim suffered broken a leg, and bodily fractures and head injuries. De Haan died about an hour after he was transported to SMMC for emergency treatment.
