PHILIPSBURG:--- The Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle was fortunate to have MP Tamara Leonard and Ms. Sharalee Lint of ‘Education for Us All’ as guest speakers at our regular weekly meeting.
Education for Us All is a new opportunity for higher education for the island’s students.
The project is the brainchild of MP Tamara Leonard, who gave us an outline of the requirements which are to be met by the students who are desirous of obtaining a scholarship. Those that are eligible are Students graduating from Sundial, MPC TKL, MPC PKL, vocational training school, PSVE, students whose field of study is not on the priority list of the Department of Studying Finance, students lacking Dutch nationality who were born on St. Maarten to foreign parents paying taxes and have graduated from both elementary and secondary schools on the Dutch side of the island, this also includes students born on the French side to a Dutch parent who did not regulate acknowledged guardianship of the child.
Scholarships have been made available through the I Am SXM, Education for us all Foundation.
There are three types of scholarships available for qualified students.
The foundation is able to make these scholarships available through funding from the St. Maarten Business Community. The businesses are asked to sponsor a child for a period of 5 years.
As part of the overall project a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has also been signed with the University of St. Martin which will facilitate a number of the scholarships which are to be provided.
Today’s students are the future generation.
