PHILIPSBURG:---The month of March is recognized by Rotary clubs worldwide as Water & Sanitation month, whereby Rotarians all around the world engage in projects and various humanitarian efforts to advocate the importance of access to fresh drinking water and to address the water and sanitation issues in developing countries around the world.
In keeping with the theme of the month, the Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset hosted several projects geared at advocating the importance of clean drinking water, one of which included a presentation on the water desalination process carried out by Seven Seas Water on St. Maarten.
The club welcomed invited guest speaker, Tano Bergen, Operations Engineer at Seven Seas Water (SXM) to their general meeting held on March 25th.
Mr. Bergen gave a detailed presentation on the water desalination process carried out at the various water plants on the island. Mr. Bergen elaborated on the importance of a process called reverse osmosis, where seawater goes through a filtration process using high-pressure pumps. The water initially goes through the filtration process, then it is treated with chlorine to remove any impurities and then mineralized so that it becomes drinkable water, before distributing to NV GEBE.
Seven Seas Water was established in the US Virgin Islands in 1996 with a mission to provide water management services to clients in the water-scarce region of the Caribbean. Seven Seas Water began their operations on the island in 2006 and they are responsible for the processing and delivery of potable water to NV GEBE for distribution.
The Club would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Seven Seas Water and to Mr. Tano Bergen for an insightful presentation on the water filtration and distribution process on the island. The club looks forward to visiting the facilities and gaining further insight into the daily operations of Seven Seas Water.
