PHILIPSBURG:--- On May 23rd the Mental Health Foundation staff attended a public lecture on Addiction and the Brain given by Dr. Carmen S. Maldonado- Vlaar, professor of neuroscience at the University of Puerto-Rico. The event was hosted at the AUC in collaboration with the University of St. Maarten and NIPA.
Dr. Maldonado- Vlaar an expert in the research of the neurobiology of addiction gave an interesting lecture on the “Maladaptive Crosswalk between Neurochemistry and behavior” to an attentive audience which included sub-topics the cycle of addiction, the brain’s reward pathway, oxytocin, arginine, and vasopressin.
