PHILIPSBURG:--- President of VOICES Foundation Ms. Nkosazana Esther Illis paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, Honorable Wycliffe Smith last Friday. Her purpose was to invite him to VOICES Foundation’s annual Cultural Ancestral Emancipation Day Celebration. Each year, this celebration is held at the Emilio Wilson Park to commemorate emancipation from slavery and to acknowledge the greatness of our ancestors.
This year, the event will be held on Monday, July 1st, from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The theme for this year is ‘Keeping our Culture Alive’. In accordance with this theme, VOICES Foundation will be honoring persons from the community who have been keeping the St. Maarten culture alive.
Along with the Minister of ECYS VOICES invites the general public to come out and celebrate this special day. Persons are encouraged to bring along their blankets and chairs to enjoy this family fun day. So come out and enjoy some local traditional, local food and drink. There will also be artistic expression of song, poetry, dance, and traditional arts and craft. St. Maarten’s very own DJ Pebbles will entertain the crowd with local music, and a bouncy castle will keep children entertained for the day. Entrance to the park will be free for all.
