AMSTERDAM/ PHILIPSBURG:--- The immediate reason for setting up the TBO was concern about the undermining problem on Sint Maarten in 2015. Following a motion by members of the House of Representatives Ronald van Raak (SP) and André Bosman (VVD), 22 million euros were released for the start of the TBO on 1 January 2016. From 2018, 12 million was available annually for this. Knops also notes that undermining is a global problem and that the European Netherlands is also affected.

Based on an article by Algemene Dagblad on the 8th October 2019 the State Secretary overview showed that on Sint Maarten dozens of investigations have been done. He only mentions publicly disclosed issues that make clear the intertwining of the upper and underworld. Politicians, civil servants, government-owned companies and private companies are among the suspects and organizations. The suspicions are about corruption,
tax fraud, money laundering, forgery, fraud, and embezzlement. This also confirms that State Sectary Knops is directly monitoring and involved in the TBO cases on St.Maarten which is very alarming.

According to the Rutte Cabinet, the TBO has led to a better understanding of corruption and money laundering in the Caribbean, so that this crime can be combated more effectively by the cooperating countries of the Kingdom. An additional advantage of this Dutch Political involvement and approach is that the resistance in the community against corruption is

supposedly increasing. The connections between undermining crime between countries and islands also become clear.

The cooperation is also necessary because of the small scale and geographical location of the islands, according to Knops. "Although much has been achieved in a short time, it is important to continue to build joint barriers against new and existing challenges in the field of cross-border crime. Close cooperation within the Kingdom, with respect for everyone's responsibility, is a crucial condition for this. ”

What is very surprising little is mentioned that Dutch Companies are heavily involved in these undermining and corruption investigations.
