French Quarter:--- A resident of French Quarter alerted the Gendarmes on Monday about a number of stolen vehicles that were stored in the bushes on Chamba Hill opposite an empty residence. The well known resident of French Quarter who preferred to remain anonymous said that he was passing the residence which he is taking care of when he noticed a strange vehicle in the yard. The man said he was on his way to Anguilla when he noticed vehicle and he immediately stopped to see who was at the empty residence. "When I checked the car I noticed a man jumping over a fence across the road and that man told me he placed his car in the yard because he ran out of gas." The resident further explained that while he was on his way out of the island the situation bothered him because of the way the vehicle was parked he realized that something was amiss with the explanation he was given by the unknown man who claimed to be the owner of the vehicle. The man said upon his return to the island on Monday he called a tow truck owner and they checked the area and were amazed to find at least 15 vehicles that were apparently stolen and stripped. SMN News reporter was called to the scene when two tow truck owners and the gendarmes were removing the vehicles.
Most of the number plates on the vehicles were removed. However, a few of the vehicles that were recovered had French number plates. Commandant of the Gendarmerie Paul Betaille could not be reached by telephone on Monday afternoon for a comment.
