PHILIPSBURG:--- President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell will start going into the various schools to provide information about the functioning of the House of Parliament and the role that it plays in shaping the laws of the land.
The first information for high school students is scheduled with the Sundial School on Monday morning at 9:00am. Her second session for the week will be on Thursday at 10:00am at the Charlotte Brookson Academy of the Performance Arts.
President Arrindell stated that her information session with schools are designed to encourage meaningful engagement between students and the House of Parliament in order to increase young people's understanding of the work, impact and relevance of the highest legislative branch of Government in the country.
"In the past we have had the primary schools coming to the House and roll playing with their peers in order to experience exactly how it goes when a Minister comes to the House of Parliament to be questioned by members of the House or to provide information about a specific topic(s).
"We have had some Members of the House also present during the roll playing which gives the students the opportunity to express their own views on topical issues to their Members of Parliament," President Arrindell said on Sunday.
The President of Parliament has also embarked upon weekly Wednesday open house of Parliament from 9:00am to 11:00am allowing the public to visit and receive information.
The aim according to President Arrindell is to strengthen parliamentary democracy and encourage greater public involvement in politics.
In the case of young people, by involving young people in the democratic process, her program aims to communicate the importance of the political process to young people and help them develop as active citizens of the society of country Sint Maarten.
