CAY HILL:--- Dr. Randall Friday, a gynecologist that has an office at the Yogesh Building and also works for the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) was shot twice in the corridor leading to his office at the Yogesh Building on Wednesday morning. According to information provided to SMN News, Dr. Friday was shot as he was walking towards his office where a number of patients were waiting for him. Dr. Friday was shot sometime around 9am Wednesday morning. He was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center by someone who was at the scene of the shooting in a private vehicle. SMN News learnt that the unknown shooter fired two shots at Dr. Friday from behind, one of the bullets hit the well known gynecologist and businessman in his back while the second shot it is believed grazed him somewhere on his body. This information police could not confirm up to midday on Wednesday.
At the St. Maarten Medical Center several well known residents and politicians rushed to the institution when they heard of the shooting. Up to midday there were a number of people including family members, close friends, and even civil servants waiting outside the emergency room of the SMMC for information on Dr. Friday's medical condition. SMN News learnt that Dr. Friday was still in the operating room of the St. Maarten Medical Center after midday as Dr. Holiday, a surgeon at SMMC, performed an emergency operation to save his colleague's life. Information provided to SMN News later in the day states that the emergency operation was successful and that Dr. Friday is currently in stable condition in the intensive care unit of the St. Maarten Medical Center.
Details on the shooting are sketchy, Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson said up to midday on Wednesday his colleagues were busy questioning witnesses and trying to piece together what really transpired at the Yogesh Building and what sparked the shooting. Henson said so far police has not arrested anyone and the patrols are busy patrolling the area where the shooting took place.
Chief of Police Peter de Witte and Prosecutor Tineke Kamps confirmed that they were informed of the shooting but they too had no details on the early morning shooting. SMN News will bring you more information when it becomes available.
Shooting incident at the Yogesh Building.
On Wednesday November 27th, 2013 at approximately 8:45am, several police patrols, detectives, and paramedics were sent to the Yogesh Building on the A. J. C. Brouwers Road where shortly before a shooting had taken place. On the scene the investigating officers spoke to witnesses who stated that the victim in this case was Dr. R. Friday, who is a gynecologist on the island and has his office at the building in question. Dr. Friday was taken to the Sint Maarten Medical Center by a private vehicle prior to the ambulance arriving on the scene. The scene was immediately secured by the police allowing the Forensic Department to start collecting evidence. According to information from the St. Maarten Medical Center, the doctor was in stable condition when he arrived, however, he was taken shortly after to the operating room to be operated on.
The doctor is at this time out of surgery and in the I.C.U. for recovery and observation. He is stable and doing well. At present no one has been identified or arrested as a possible suspect in this case. The investigation is in its preliminary stages and the police department is asking anyone that may have any information in connection with this investigation to come forward.
