LACNIC 23 off to successful start in Lima

lacnics19052015LIMA:---- More than 400 international delegates have converged in scenic Lima, Peru for LACNIC 23, an annual meeting of the Internet community from Latin America and the Caribbean, taking place from May 18 to 22.

LACNIC is the organisation responsible for managing Internet numbering resources for Latin America and the portions of the Caribbean. It is one of five bodies known as Regional Internet Registries that exist worldwide.

Co-hosted by the Peruvian Scientific Network, the five-day meeting will cover a number of current technical issues such as Internet security and the promotion of technical protocols for managing the internet, including IPv6 deployment. These topics will be raised in several special purpose public forums like the Latin American and Caribbean Network Operators Group (LACNOG), the Network Security Forum (LACSEC) and the Latin American IPv6 Forum (FLIP6) throughout the week.

But the weeklong event is not only about Internet numbers and technical protocols. Delegates will participate in debates about a wide range of issues affecting the regional and global Internet community.

On May 19, a six-member panel debated the region's response to the announcement made by the U.S. government in March 2014 that it would be transitioning stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to the global Internet community. LACNIC 23 provides a forum for regional stakeholders to debate and consult on possible scenarios of IANA transition.

Other groups and organisations committed to Internet development in the region such as LAC-IX, CaribNOG and the Internet Society (ISOC) are also present at LACNIC 23.

"It's very important that our region gets educated about what's going on in the Latin American and Caribbean Internet community. And it's very important that Caribbean actors build relationships with players outside of the Caribbean so that together we can take a collaborative approach to regional challenges," Shernon Osepa, Manager, Regional Affairs for Latin America and the Caribbean at ISOC told the T&T Guardian.

"Events like LACNIC 23 make that possible by bringing together key people from across the region and around the world," he said.
