MULLET BAY:--- Stanley Samuel was able to stay ahead of a group of six golfers that were not impressed by the high winds and tough course conditions at Mullet Bay Golf Course to win the July Medal Play Golf Tournament organized by the St. Maarten Golf Association SMGA over the weekend. Jan Peter Holtland won Overall Low Net with a score of 65 after deduction of his 27 handicap.
A small group of 23 golfers challenged the windy golf course and tried to add another good score for the qualification for the St. Maarten team that will compete in the Eastern Caribbean Golf Championship. This tournament will take place in October in St. Maarten at the Mullet Bay Golf Course.
Samuel, who finished the par 70 Mullet Bay Golf Course with a score of 77, stayed 1 shot ahead of last month winner Jesus Rivera and Philippe Thevenet. As a result, Samuel won both the Overall Low Gross for the tournament, as well as the 1st Low Gross prize in the Men’s category. In the same category Jan Peter Holtland won Overall Low Net as well as 1st Low Net with a score of 65 strokes after deduction of his 27 handicap. Although Rivera didn’t win, he didn’t end up empty handed; he ended up as the player with the fewest amount of putts, needing only 29 putts during the 18 holes stretch.
The Ladies Category had a total of 4 participants this time. 1st Low Gross was won by Betty Green with a score of 89 strokes, 1st Low Net was won by Sidsel Jacobsen after a match of cards with a Low Net score of 78 strokes.
In the category Senior’s for players between 50 and 60 years old, 7 participants battled it out. Philippe Thevenet won once again the prize for 1st Low Gross with a score of 78 strokes, 1st Low Net was won after a card playoff by Marius Arrondell with a Net score of 70.
In the Super Seniors Category for players over 60 years old, 1st Low Gross was won by Keith Graham with a score of 89, 1st Low Net was won by Richard Gibson with a score of 84 Low Net.
