Police/Immigration control at construction site: 5 illegals arrested

PHILIPSBURG:--- On Thursday morning, the 10th of August 2017, the Police and Immigration officers carried out a control at a construction site on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. When the officers arrived at the site, one of the construction workers tried to escape and while fleeing he tripped over an iron rod injuring himself.
Unfortunately, the rod pierced his hand. The ambulance was immediately called for assistance and eventually took him to the emergency room for medical attention. After the medical treatment, he was brought to the station for further investigation.

During this control, the Immigration Officers arrested three men from the Dominican Republic and two men of Venezuelan Nationality. The 5 men were not in the possession of a valid work permit or a valid residence permit. They were arrested and are in police custody awaiting their expulsion to their countries of origin.

According to the law, the construction companies who hire illegal workers can receive a fine up to NAF. 100.000,-. The Sint Maarten Police Force/ Immigration Department will continue to carry out more controls on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten.

The case is officially taken over by the Unit Human Trafficking and Smuggling for further investigation and the Prosecutors Office will decide what the following steps in this investigation will be.
