Port au Prince Haiti:--- An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, occurred on Saturday morning, at 8:29 am North latitude and 73.480 West longitude, at a depth of 10 km.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 20 km south of Petit Trou de Nippes, 121 km southwest of Port-au-Prince, 12 km northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud, and 75 km south-east of Jérémie. It was felt in many areas of the country.
Jerry Chandler, Director of the DPC (Directorate of Civil Protection) reports that houses have collapsed, and people have been buried under the rubble. The city of Les Cayes was heavily affected by the earthquake, and several deaths and injuries were recorded, following the collapse of two hotels and several houses.
The hospital in the city of Les Cayes is said to be overwhelmed following the arrival of numerous wounded and would require reinforcements in health personnel and medicines for emergency care.
A second earthquake, of magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale, occurred at 8:49 am minutes about 20 minutes after the first earthquake.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) indicates that there is "an urgent need to find blood for the victims. We urgently appeal to all those willing to show solidarity by donating blood
The USGS (United States Geological Survey), Institute of Geological Studies of the United States, reports that the earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday morning, is located about 75 km east of the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck the country on January 12, 2010. This earthquake caused major material damage and the death of more than 200,000 people. According to the USGS, the August 13, 2021 earthquake likely occurred in the same fault system as the January 2010 earthquake.
