Chaque 21 février, la langue de naissance est mise à l’honneur par l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), grâce à la Journée mondiale de la langue maternelle.
Depuis 2009, la Collectivité de Saint-Martin et sa Direction des Affaires Culturelles (DAC) saisissent cette occasion chaque année, en partenariat avec l’UNESCO, pour valoriser l’anglais saint-martinois à travers des interviews et des animations permettant de pratiquer la langue de Saint-Martin et de créer du lien autour de la richesse et l’originalité du « parler saint-martinois ».
Le programme élaboré par la Collectivité, ce 21 février 2024, consiste à vous proposer 3 émissions radio avec des invités, sous l’intitulé « L’importance de préserver la langue maternelle », pour échanger sur son origine et ses spécificités culturelles. Un micro-trottoir, une vidéo animée et l’interview de monsieur Alexis Standford « Le langage est à la racine de l’identité culturelle saint-martinoise », vous permettront de découvrir les spécificités et l’histoire de la langue maternelle locale.
Enfin, un quizz sera diffusé sur les réseaux sociaux de la Collectivité pour tester les connaissances du public. Il s’agit de mettre en valeur le « S’matin english » et d’encourager les Saint-Martinois natifs et toutes les autres communautés à utiliser la langue locale autant que possible durant cette journée, en mettant en lumière les traditions orales.
La langue de Saint-Martin est un patrimoine qu’il faut cultiver et transmettre aux jeunes générations. Elle est le pilier de la culture et de l’identité saint-martinoise, du patrimoine séculaire de l’île et de l’héritage qui nous a été transmis par nos ancêtres au fil de l’histoire et de l’évolution de la Friendly island.

International Mother Language Day
Let’s promote our linguistic skills !
The language of birth is honored by the United Nations (UN) on February 21 as part of International Mother Language Day. In partnership with UNESCO, the Collectivité of Saint-Martin and its Cultural Affairs Department are taking this opportunity to promote Saint-Martin English through interviews and activities allowing people to practice the mother language of Saint-Martin and create links around the richness and originality of the Saint-Martin dialect.
The program developed by the Collectivité on Wednesday February 21 consists of offering a radio program with guests, entitled “The importance of preserving our mother tongue”, to discuss its origin and cultural specificities. A street interview entitled « Speak wee language », an animated video and the interview with Mr. Alexis Standford entitled “Language is at the root of the St. Martin cultural identity”, will help you to discover the specificities and history of the St. Martin mother tongue.
On the 21st of February, a quiz will be broadcast on the Collectivité’s social networks to test the public's knowledge. This is about talking “S’matin English” and encouraging native Saint-Martiners and all other communities to use the local language as much as possible during this day, by highlighting oral traditions.
The language of Saint-Martin is a heritage that must be cultivated and transmitted to younger generations. It is the pillar of the heritage that has been given to us by our ancestors throughout the history and evolution of the Friendly island. The Collectivité of Saint-Martin invites you to follow the program for International Mother Language Day and to test your knowledge by participating in the quiz which will be broadcast on the 21st.
