Francesco Corallo said in a statement that was also emailed to SMN News that he sent a letter to the Attorney General of St. Maarten Taco Stein indicating his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement on St. Maarten since he is a Dutch citizen. Corallo said that he informed Stein of his willingness to cooperate with local authorities and in local courts pending any possible extradition. He said that the accusations and warrant in Italy is specifically for "conspiracy and intent of corruption of a private individual" which according to Corallo is not a recognized crime on St. Maarten and most other countries of the world. Corallo said the accusations made against him in Italy are false and unfounded and that he never paid or promised to pay any kind of bribe to obtain loans for his company. The loan he said was obtained legally and transparently and is in good standing since 70% of it has been paid off.
Corallo's lawyers sent a letter to St. Maarten's Attorney General Taco Stein on June 22, 2012 informing him that Corallo is not in Italy and he is also not on St. Maarten. However, the well known businessman indicated in his letter that he is willing to return to St. Maarten within 48 hours if law enforcement on St. Maarten would agree to the conditions they set forth. One such condition is that Mr. Corallo must not be arrested and he is willing to hand over his passport if necessary pending extradition proceedings should Italy file for him to be extradited. The attorney said right now the Italian authorities cannot file for extradition because Corallo's location is unknown to them and if such a request is filed while he is on St. Maarten he will legally oppose the extradition.
SMN News contacted OM Taco Stein for a comment on the letter he received and Stein said he cannot comment on the letter. Stein said he is not authorized by the Attorney General of Curacao to speak on any matters.
SMN News further learnt from reliable sources that Stein did not agree to the conditions Corallo and his lawyers wanted, therefore no deal has been made.
