Chamber of Commerce special airs on Tuesday.

Philipsburg (DCOMM):--- The Department of Communication (DCOMM) will be airing a special on the Chamber of Commerce & Industry at 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 22. The program will air on St. Maarten Cable TV channel 115.

In this TV Special, the DCOMM interviewed the Chamber's Executive Director Claret Connor about the objectives and tasks, its organizational structure, current issues, challenges, public-private partnership ventures, inner workings, projects and plans, elevating standards of quality service, requirements for registering a business, and finally, the Chamber's future aspirations.

The Television special is intended to provide not only information to the public about what exactly is the chamber's role in society, but also to stimulate awareness of such and to encourage businesses to partner with the chamber.

As is, the Chamber of Commerce & Industry, representing approximately 17,000 members of all types of businesses on St. Maarten, main tasks are:

  1. Public registration of all businesses;
  2. Providing advice, in the interest of its members, to government, solicited or not, on a variety of topics.

In the tv special, Connor elaborates on "increasing the working relationship between its members, government, and its social partners to increase the quality of service to the public on a whole."

He added, "We have to work in conjunction with unions, other trade associations, Non-Government Organizations, and of course Government to discuss, oppose, or support certain issues that affect the business community."

Connor, in addition, said that the Chamber has been busy upgrading its database and dealing with the challenges of globalization.

Connor said, "Considering its core tasks and representing so many businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, whose funding comes from membership, has to be proactive and conduct themselves in a most advantageous manner if we want to advanced ourselves."

"What is fundamental," Connor said, "is that we have to ensure quality service to our guests, the tourists that come to the island and spend money. They provide us with a living; in turn, we have to hold each other accountable and responsible."

DCOMM in its capacity, the communication division of the Government of St. Maarten, is working with government related organizations to bring more awareness to the public of St. Maarten.

The tv special will air on St. Maarten Cable TV at 6pm, channel 115. The public is urged to watch the special to get the latest developments at the Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
