Coming Tuesday February 19th, 2013, at 14:00 pm in the Hope Estate Senior Citizens Recreational Center, the SMSPA will organize an information session for all seniors and their family members in Sint Maarten. The information session is entitled: "SMSPA Achievements and What Next".
The vice-president of the SMSPA just returned from attendinig a 10 day Conference of the UN Committee for Social Development. Mr Jessurun left on Monday February 4th to New York to represent Alzheimer's Disease International at this conference. Starting the 1st of February Mr. Jessurun has also been appointed as CORV Ambassador to International Organizations. CORV is the Coordination of Civil Society Organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean on Aging. The board of the SMSPA is very pleased that their board member has these international assignments. The decision was taken to assign their vice-president to rally among the participating organizations at this UN world conference for solidarity and support for our struggle for equal pensions, equal health care, and equal social protection in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and to expand the SMSPA network of international non-governmental organizations.
The main topics of the UN Conference in NewYork where eradication of poverty, social protection, empowerment of the poor, the seniors, the youth and the disabled, and the evaluation and follow up of the 2002 Madrid International Action Plan on Aging.
At the information session the SMSPA board will address the following topics:
- The 1000 guilders pension increase in Sint Maarten, the ongoing pension reform and the struggle for our right to equal social security in the Kingdom of the Netherlands
- The health care treatment of seniors in Sint Maarten, the discriminatory SZV health care insurances, the ongoing health care reform and the struggle for our right to equal standard of health care in the Kingdom of the Netherlands
- Local and international support for our struggle for equal rights in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the position of the governments and the parliaments in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, international treaty obligations, the International Action Plan on Aging and the outcome of the 51st Conference of the Committee for Social Development (CSD 51) from the United Nations Economic and Social Committee (UN ECOSOC)
All the members of the SMSPA and prospective members are hereby invited to come out. Also all members of the press are invited to inform the public at large. By word of mouth everyone is invited to come out, to be informed and to let their voice be heard!
