For the upcoming Heineken Regatta from February 28 – March 3, 2013, the Dutch Caribbean Coastguard is issuing some safety recommendations.
The Coastguard is aware that the Heineken Regatta is an event that attracts many visitors and participants. In order to make sure that everything goes well, there are some rules and regulations to be followed:
- Registration numbers on both sides of the vessel
- Personal flotation devices
- Visual Distress Signal (Flares, floating smoke signals, etc)
- Fire extinguisher (check the expiration date)
- Sound producing device, such as a whistle or horn (not a human produced noise)
- VHF-radio
- Valid certificate of competence
- Valid certificate of sea worthiness
- No sailing while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
In addition it is also advisable to have the following:
- Mobile phone with a good working battery
- Enough drinking water
- A good working torch
