Simpson Bay:--- Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson reported on Sunday that on Saturday March 2nd at approximately 1:25am while the festivities of the Heineken Regatta were still ongoing on the Boardwalk in Philipsburg, a phone call came into the Central Police Dispatch stating that in the vicinity of Buccaneers Bar and Restaurant in the Billy Folly area several men were busy stripping parts from a car.
Henson said when police received the information, several police patrols including a bike patrol were directed to the area to investigate the matter. While the area was being searched by the bike patrol that were first on the scene, one officer noticed a grey colored Toyota suspiciously parked across from the Buccaneers Bar and Restaurant. When the officer attempted to approach the car, the driver of the car intentionally drove the car in question towards the police officer. The officer, fearing for his life, had no other alternative but to jump from his bike to avoid being run over by the car. The driver of the suspected vehicle continued fleeing the scene and drove over the officers bike causing severe damage. The other bike patrol officer who had seen what took place then pulled his service weapon and fired several shots at the fleeing vehicle. The suspected vehicle fled the scene, at very high speed, in the direction of Maho Reef without any lights. A back-up police patrol searched the Simpson Bay and Maho Reef area to locate the suspects or suspected vehicle without any results. During the investigation in the immediate area, the officers located a white Hyundai i10 rental car with license-plate 9425 AAA that was stripped of several parts from the front of the vehicle. This rental car was confiscated for further investigation. Thus far into the investigation it could not be determined if the shots that were fired by police hit the suspected vehicle or if anyone was injured. The investigation is ongoing.
