ST. MAARTEN ACADEMY INTERNAL SCIENCE FAIR COMPETITON 2013 WAS A SUCCESS.

Young Scientists Showcase St. Maarten's Future

On Friday, March 8, 2013, the St. Maarten Academy conducted their 1st Annual Internal Science Fair competition. The fair, which was organized and managed by Science Fair Coordinators Mrs. Suja Pereppadan and Mr. Claude Javois, was held in the schools' gymnasium from 7:25 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. There were 25 Science projects which highlighted the competition in the areas of Science and Technology. Thirteen (13) projects represented the science category and twelve (12) the technological category, respectively.
The projects centered on alternative forms of "green" energy, DNA research; animal and plant cloning; genetics; environmental science type projects such as global warming, indoor air quality pollution, plasma gasification of solid waste and sea water pollution and control; transportation science and technology; plant science (botany); and technical physics, to name a few.
About forty-six (46) students, comprising of third and fourth formers, participated in the annual Science fair event. The event drew students from the school, administrators, staff members, Academy board members and the public in general.
The judges comprised of ten (10) teachers and two (2) senior students who participated in previous external science fair competitions. The school established science fair judging criteria based on scientific and/or engineering goals, creativity, thoroughness, skills and clarity of presentation. The winners of the competition will be announced at a special ceremony to be held at the St. Maarten Academy (academic campus). The date is still to be determined.
The St. Maarten Academy plans to make the Science fair competition an annual event and include students at all the form levels. The most outstanding Science projects will be chosen from both the science and technology categories and sent to the Annual External Science Fair competition conducted by the St. Maarten Science Fair foundation. The foundation annually conducts the science fair and poster competition for secondary schools.
The St. Maarten Academy would like to thank the public and all those who made the 1st Annual Science Fair competition event possible and a success. We look forward to Internal Science Fair 2014.
To the students, thank you for a great job well done.
