GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- On Friday afternoon, Caretaker Minister of Education, Culture, Youth & Sports Hon. Silveria Jacobs was just on time to witness the last few minutes of the Interscholastic Water Polo championship match between Hillside Christian Schools and the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) School at the pool at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex.
Both teams, a mixture of boys and girls in grade 3, competed with heart and soul to be able to claim the 1st place Championship trophy. In the end, the victory was awarded to the Hillside Christian Schools, to the jubilation of students, teachers, staff and parents present.
Though disappointed in their second place finish, the SDA team proved to be troopers who gracefully accepted the 2nd place trophy. Third place had been decided in the previous match which saw the Oranje School team winning over the Marie Genevieve de Weever School which placed 4th.
All winning schools were awarded a trophy while each swimmer received their individual medals. All prizes were donated courtesy of Intermar Shipping, which was represented by Sandra Hazel in the prize giving ceremony.
In congratulating the winners, Minister Jacobs reminded all, especially the adults to continue to encourage competitiveness as well as sportsmanship, and respect for the referees decisions. "Our youth look up to us and learn from us how to behave and react to situations. We must win and lose with pride and graciousness," Minister Jacobs pointed out.
The swimming coaches, teachers, and students were commended for their dedication in making this year's water polo competition an exciting one. Minister Jacobs also thanked the corporate sponsors for their contribution in making the prize giving ceremony possible.
